Posts: 14 Location: Moorhead, MN | Hey Guys, I just got started in Musky fishing and thought about hiring a guide. I would like to go on Leech Lake because it's alot closer to home. But Lake Vermillion would be fun place to go fish because it's an up and coming lake with good fish. How much does a guide cost and which lake is better overall and what are your chances of catching fish.

Location: Illinois-Indiana | Leech holds a ton of big fish and is a huge body of water, if you go there hire Jim Murphy, he is a top notch guide and will put you on fish. He hits this board once in a while and I'm sure someone here has his number. Good luck!

| i will second the vote on leech lake, even though big V is an up and coming hot spot, leech has the time honored tradition of holding big fish. big V is a much more scenic lake if that's what you want. | |||

Posts: 229 | Boat size would help dictate my choice as well. If you run a smaller boat you won't be able to get out on Leech unless you pretty much fish Walker Bay exclusively. I was up there last summer and saw some pretty monster waves. Hope you have a good time. By the way I went out with Al Maas and had a great time. Saw plenty of fish, but none in the boat except a few northerns. Heard high marks on Murph as well as Jim Flesch. Andy

The main lake basin can get quite windy, so if you have a smaller boat you might want to concentrate on Agency Bay or Walker Bay (even Walker Bay can get big waves with the right direction wind). Vermilion is very picturesque and beautiful. There are a lot of islands you can use as a windbreak if the wind gets too rough. Edited by Otter 2/21/2003 10:43 AM

Posts: 376 Location: Lake Vermilion Tower, MN | Hi All, I can't believe that anyone could dog the Big V, maybe you had a bad day but that happens everywhere. Leech is an awsome fishery, but it also gets pounded to death and the weekends are like going to see the boat show. I have fished leech for years and there is NO WAY, it can match the Big V for numbers of 40+ fish. The numbers of 50+ muskies in the last 2 years has been outstanding. You can always get out to fish, no matter where, or how hard the wind is blowing. Also the muskie guides are much better looking, than all them old guys on leech.

Posts: 37 Location: Walker, MN | Thought I might jump in here, Leech is 112,000 acres so I would not say it gets pounded, true some of the "main" spots get there share of visitors. However there are muskies in virtually all areas of the lake, just pull off and find your own spot chances are if you work new areas you will find new fish. As far as numbers of 40" or 50" fish go, if I follow the MI lunge Log no other lake other than LOTW produced more 50". I also suspect BigV gets its share of pressure but if it doesnt the hoopla over that tournament should give you some additional exposure. Now having said that I would love to get up and fish Vermillion I know that it is great fishery, I just cant get myself off Leech I have fished it hard for 11 years and there are so many areas I have not fished yet!

Location: Illinois-Indiana | Terry, Sorry, didn't mean to dis the big V, I fished it once a few years back and loved it, even look forward to getting up that way again, maybe we can hook up for a days fishing. Leech just has the reputation for some big fish coming out of it every year. Take care!!!!

Posts: 37 Location: Walker, MN | Hey, Guideman I forgot to say that you are probably right about the guides being more handsome on the BigV our guys have been put away wet way too many times. Also forgot to thank you for your generosity in helping out with the donation to the 5 Mile Pt. raffle! Thanks Dan

Posts: 376 Location: Lake Vermilion Tower, MN | Hi Dan, Thank you! I only wish I could have done even more. The leech lake spawning bed is the most important issue in the muskie world right now, and I hope we can get it done.
