Posts: 48 | Just wondering how many of your musky baits have never boated a fish? I was cleaning my musky box the other day and it dawned on me that of all the lures I have only a select few have caught the majority of my fish. I realize everyone has their "confidence" baits but I am wondering if I am a versatile musky angler with a stocked arsenal of gear or just an average fisherman with a musky lure collecting hobby. Not sure there's alot of difference. Maybe I'd be better off taking a small box of these 5 or 6 baits on my next outing and leaving my big lakewood at home?

Posts: 1185 Location: Iowa | I would say about 99.9% of the baits we own (between my dad and I) have never boated a muskie...it's kind of disheartening to think about but oh well...still fun to collect...

Posts: 1144 Location: Minnesota. | "Confidence baits"...When I first began this craze around 1981 it took me fishing w/a good friend and over 3 yrs. before I actually realized that muskies can be taken on a topwater...!! Then it was on only calm, smooth, windless days only! 'Magine that? "No man is an island!" That intro. from a friend helped me tons. Now my topwater box is bigger'n my bucktail box. Jeremy.

Posts: 8781 | I'd say about 1 in ten have caught a fish. What's more frightening is that 5 out of ten have never seen water.

Posts: 270 Location: brooklyn park mn | I would have to say half of the baits i have in the box have caught fish. But then again I change baits more than most people do. Its not uncommon for me to throw every lure I own (150) on a musky trip for a week just cause I can and I thinks its fun until fish tell me what they want. After all I figure what's the point in collecting all them and buying them if I don't use em. Sure I can throw a black and orange bucktail double ten all day and it may out produce everything else but that 5 inch big game would never had caught a monster is my thinking. Plus it gives me excuses to buy more and use more for my addiction lol..

Posts: 410 Location: one foot over the line | maybe its just me, or that i can be a stubborn SOB, which is probably why i fish muskies, but I find myself throwing certain lures just because i want to catch a fish on that particular bait. I'm not right in the head.

Posts: 1405 Location: Detroit River | Since I have a small boat I can only carry 2 Special Mates with me, which means I have about 100 baits with me & 25% of those lures have caught fish. Of those 100 baits 15 of them are Bondy Baits & 13 of those 15 have put musky in the boat. I have 5 more Bondy Meal Tickets & 2.0's coming so I'll need to make room in the box else get a bigger boat. Bucktails, Red October tubes, Thunder Beasts, & Whopper Plopper have accounted for most of the rest. One of these days I'm going to land a musky on the dozen or so glide baits I own. Posts: 994 Location: Minnesota: where it's tough to be a sportsfan! | I used to fish with a guy that six baits, that was it. He didn't even bring them all when we went out! Styrofoam bucket, threee f-four baits he was good for a few days! I was young then and didn't have many more than he did. I often offered to let him try one of my new baits but it was never of interest to him. I will say he had excellent contact & knowledge of his baits! That alone helped him catch fish. I just dug a box out Sunday of baits that have caught 10 or more fish. I started "saving" them at some point in the 90's. My thought was to give my boys proven baits as my parting gift. I do not have the ability to just have a few baits I wish I did and respect the man that can!

Posts: 48 | I'm sure everyone has one of these baits but I have an old walleye 6" phantom jerkbait that has caught the majority of my musky and large pike. It has gotten hit so hard that the majority of the clear coat is gone. Several large indentions in the wood from musky teeth are present. Up until the end of last season it was still fishable but gets so waterlogged it won't run correctly. I refinished it this winter and am anxious to see if it has the old magic. I have several other phantoms in my box including newer versions of that same bait but I have only produced follows with them. What are some of your classic "old Faithfuls"?

Posts: 253 Location: On the water | This is a great topic. Let me tell you what I do with my baits. The 12 baits I carry have all caught fish, easy to work and they don‘t kill me casting. I add a new bait for one season. If it doesn’t catch a fish, I give it to my son-in-law, he‘s the one with all the lures. It’s very hard to break into the lineup, the last one was a Squirrelly Hellhound. They have to produce or there gone! The 3 Rods I use in summer are (1) Bucktail. (2) Top Water. (3) Crankbait or Rubber. In the fall I switch a few baits but that’s it. Good luck to everyone on finding their 12 baits. Tom.

Posts: 1106 Location: Muskegon Michigan | I downsized a couple years ago from carrying near 200 baits to one small lakewood box with about 30 lures in it. Most of them have caught fish. I keep adding in new ones and if they work they stay if not they go on ebay. I just made 20 new Buck tails. I hope I get two good ones out of the bunch. For me its all about just carrying productive baits. Mike
