Subject: Baits / Tactics

As the season approaches I have a simple question. I'm 4 years into this now and completly addicted! I have confidence in one bait which most of you can probably guess (BUCKTAIL). If you were to recommend to a ROOKIE musky fisherman the second best throw option to concentrate on this year what would it be? Specifics on that second option would be apprecited.

Love this forum!

I would say to a rookie to through a topwater prop bait, like a pacemaker. He could see it the hole time and all you have to do is cast out and reel in. But if he has a good reel, COWGIRL!!

A dive and rise jerkbait. 9" Smity is a good lure and pretty much foolproof to use.

Tough one to only recommend one other lure. I'd opt for a Rumbler or a Weagle as one MUST have a topwater if for no other reason than the excitement.

Bulldawgs/Curly Sues! As the years have passed plastics have become a staple of every hunters box. So much that I now use plastics in place of most of my jerkbait applications. Never considered myself a jerkbait fisherman just not my style, but with these baits I can fish more focused. Not to mention you can rip , twitch, pull, swim, jig, etc versatility at its finest.

Thanks for the feedback everyone! It's so easy to keep throwing what you've had sucess with. I do throw Dawgs, top waters and Suicks but loose patience quickly and go back to the confidence bait (Bucktail).

As we all know, the muskies are either shallow, deep, or somewhere inbetween. You're already fishing a bucktail which runs in the 1-4' water column. I would go to a plastic-SuperD or Bulldawg. These can be fished as shallow as 4', jigged on the bottom in 25', or swam consistently at 10'.

Hard to go wrong with a shallow black mag bull dawg. You can always add some weight to it to get it down and it will obviously fish shallow too.

I agree tough to recommend just one bait. Here is my 2 cents. Expand to a couple of different bait types. Force yourself to fish them when the fish are on....this will build confidence.

1. Top Water- 2 baits that will produce action
- Top Raider- easy to use prop style
- Poes Giant Jack Pot- Easy to use walk-the-dog
2. Jerk Baits-
- Hell Hound- Easy to use walk-the-dog sub surface

Once you gain confidence in these types move onto to a couple of more bait types like crand baits and plastics (may be this season, may be next season). Before you know it you will have confidence baits that you can apply to different fishing situations that will produce when bucktails are not doing it.

I would also go with a BullDawg. As previously mentioned, you can rip, twitch, swim, jig, jerk, or pull a BullDawg. You're only limited by your imagination. A spinnerbait and a topwater (topraider and weagle) would round out my top baits.

Twitchbait like a ShallowRaider, Jake, Big Game, Grandma, about a million other brands...they're sure hooking and I like to work 'em through weeds during mid-summer as an alternative to bucktails. Practice a little and you'll be able bump, rip and twitch them through almost anything.
