Posts: 431 | Has anyone tried something other than mono as a line backer? What I mean here is possibly making a space that fits over the spool to take up room. Chris

Location: Des Moines IA | I've seen tape used before. I wouldn't recommend it, but I've seen it done. Why not use Mono?

I use 12 pound mono that I buy at Wal-Mart for like $1.89 for 300 yards. Fill it up about 75-80 with cheap crap mono.

Posts: 299 | Cheap, thick 20 lb. mono works great and won't slip.

Posts: 2024 | I tried Brian Urlacher once. Worked pretty well. I'm trying Ray Lewis now. Proving to be pretty good. ![]()

Posts: 431 | Oh you're killing me!!! Come on Dick Butkis!!!! Reason i ask is that I pulled apart an old reel and found a two piece plastic spacer that fit over the spool to take up space and thought about using it on one of my AC300. Chris

What about electrical tape? Provides a good nonslip surface once the braid digs into it and is a little bulkier than Scotch of masking tape.

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | This isn't really answering your question, but I use very cheap 20 lb. (or so) mono too. I don't know if I see any benefit to not using some cheap old line. curleytail

Posts: 431 | Alright, so now how do you know much backer to put on a AC300 for 100lb power pro. Chris

Posts: 2024 | I, personally, put on enough backing to cover the spool (tightly) 2-4 times. You're never going to get down to the backing fighting a fish so for me putting the backing on is just to prevent the line from slipping on the spool.

Posts: 8820 | Step 1. Spool up a line counter reel with the braid of choice. Step 1: Tie the loose end to the spool of an empty reel. Step 3: Reel off however many feet of braid you want on your reel. Step 4: Cut the line and tie your mono onto the braid. Step 5: Reel until the spool is filled. Step 6: Reverse onto another reel. Like I said, it's a pain, but once you have the mono backing on your reel all you ever need to do is replace the braid, and if you measured it right the first time, you'll always have the right amount of line.

Posts: 1270 | addict, sounds great but that line counter is nowhere near accurate at the bottom of the spool. Linecounters just count spool revalutions and an empty spool takes a lot less line per rev than a full spool.

Fill up your spool 75-80% with cheap mono. You only need about 60 yards of line on you reel.

Posts: 8820 | Reelman, you're actually counting the line as you're taking it off the spool, which is full when you start, so it should average out pretty well. Even if it isn't 100% accurate -- as long as you have enough braid to cover a bomb cast and change you're fine.

Posts: 1270 | addict, I see what you are saying if the spool of the linecounter is full but that takes A LOT of line to fill most linecounters with a super line.
