Over the years we see many threads debating the rising cost of boats. Depending on how often you hitch up the boat and how far you drive, the boat may not be your biggest expense to participate in this goofy hobby of ours. I actually see my tow vehicle as my biggest expense because of the mileage I put on to stay on the hot bite. The cost of this vehicle is a combination of gas, maintenance and the biggest factor, depreciation which is much faster than my boat.

How many miles do you guys think you put on each year to chase muskies?

I live 7 miles from Pewaukee Lake in SE WI so I'm fortunate that way. A couple of trips to Northern WI puts me between 1000 and 2500. M1st outings may add to the mileage, but still in this range!

I spent a whole lot more on my '01 tow vehicle. In '06, every couple hundred mile trip I ended up replacing something. Figured I'd get rid of that tow vehicle because of various factors; one of which is the desire to avoid being the one on the side of the road although there is no guarantee.

25-30K, 50K? Towing your boat? Wow. I thought I put on a lot of miles, except last year. I would say my average year would be around 15K, give or take a few thousand. That's towing a boat. Add another 3K just driving to fish with someone, or to tourney's. But that's not all mukies, either.

Either way, I have a 97 F150, and I just turned 196K yestarday. This is by far the best vehicle I have ever owned. The only thing that does not work, is the lumbar adjuster on the driver seat. The single most expensive repar was the alternator, $400, which I was unable to replace myself, as I was on the road at the time.

Probobly under 10,000 miles a year chasing muskies. That'll hopefully change this year. My '97 Cherokee has 143,000 but tows the boat great. Only non-maintanence problem was evaporator....and I didn't want to tackle that myself.

i thought the same thing Shep did... 20,000-50,000 towing a boat? what do you drive 4 hours EACH WAY with your rig 100+ days a year?

is the poll: how many all purpose miles you put on the vehicle you use to tow your boat...or how many miles you put on your rig while towing your boat? there's a big difference.

most people average 10,000-20,000 on a vehicle a year and only a small fraction of their total driving is towing a boat.

At the start of the 06 musky season I had 35000 on my truck. At the end of the season I had 64000. I only live 4 miles from work and do very little driving unless I am on my way to the lake. Lots of trips to MN and Northern WI from southern WI chasing the hot bite.

To clarify on the questions, I authored the question on the assumption that we were talking only about the miles you tow or drive to meet someone to fish each year, not every mile you put on for work, local errands, etc. I do about 12-15,000 per year.
