A while back i saw somewhere where there was a way to modify jackpots to increase hookup percentages. Anyone know how to do this? And please dont say just go get a weagle!!!

One thing I've tried in the past is to either use a longer shank hook on the rear treble or to use the same size hook but add an additional split ring to move the hook back another 3/8".

But to be honest, I switched primarily to Doc's quite a few years back and after last seasons hookup percentages on Weagles it will be hard to tie on a Jackpot again.

Take the rear treble off, slip over a 3/4" section of shrink rap tube and then reattach the hook. Heat it up and the hook will stay horizontal in the water offering up better hook ups.

I'll second the shrink tube modification - been doing it for years - works great
I do it the Weagle as well.

I'm rather suprised no one said "T the hooks".

T the hooks for sure, and I do the shrink wrap trick on most of my topwaters. Larger gap hooks also help

Or just use Weagles, Docs, and Vipers

DO you ever stop to think about the "poor" hooking ratios off topwaters. I think the are poor because you see all the misses. How many times have you retrieved a bucktail and thought that something wasn't right or felt something different? I would anticipate that the ratios aren't as for off as one thinks.

Anyone ever try those suspendo dots that you stick on the bait to make it weigh more? i would think that these would let it ride a hair bit lower in the water resulting in better hookups.

if you are gonna weight any baits at all, go with the Jomusky weight system

I tried weighting them, and they are still too #*^@ light.
I went to lower-riding walk the dog lures and my hooking percentages went up.
Fish try to eat the Jackpot, but when they come after it and push a wall of water, the lure goes surfing on the wall of water and right out of their reach. I like the ones that are heavier and stay put.
Best results that I had were burying a 1/2 ounce sinker right at the center of gravity after I went up one hook size on both trebles....and YES...T all belly hooks. It worked on the first one that I tried, so I did 2 more and screwed them up completely. They went right in the campfire.
Now I use Top Preys and the new Weagles.
