Posts: 600 Location: West Bend, WI | Anyone check out the DiamondBack rods found at Thorne Bros?I'm looking for a new jerkbait rod for the new season. These seem like they would be nice rods but I'v never seen them in person yet.I'm also looking for a jerkbait rod with a little longer handle than most.Does this mean that I have to go with a custom then?

The Diamondback custom rods are the best out there from what people tell me. You can go online to Thorne Brothers and design exactly what you want, or call them directly if you would like more details. These rods handle great and are very light yet durable. Frank's Custom Rods is making me one to order, 8' Heavy with a fast action tip, custom foregrip and extended handle. Very sweet and well worth the money I believe. I have many other great rods at various price points but this will be the ultimate rod if that is what you are looking for?

Posts: 600 Location: West Bend, WI | I should of been more specific,I'm referring to the rods built by diamond back themselves, not the customs that Thorne makes.

Thorne Bros. online catalog lists Diamondback rods that are constructed by Diamondback. They do not have them in the store. Thorne Bros. uses Diamondback blanks and constructs their own customs to your specifications. Prices start at around 249.00 and go up. I am having a jerkbait rod made for me right now. They can do whatever you want. If you live in the area, I would stop in to the store and talk to Pat Smith about what your needs in a jerkbait rod are. He is very knowledgeable and fishes for Musky. I hope this helps. Also, Thorne bros. does have some pre-made "Thorne Bros." Diamondback rods on the racks in the store. Once you pick up a Diamondback and compare it to a St. Croix Avid, you will want a Diamondback. Unbelievably light weight. Good Luck! DaveM

Posts: 72 | Rear (butt section) grip lengths: St.Croix=12" Diamondback=13" Shimano=13" Fig Rig=13-1/4" Also, St.Croix has the fattest/thickest cork and Diamondback has the thinnest. Personally, I like the thinner cork, but again everyone has their preferences in rods. We could custom build you a rod to your specifications on a Diamondback, St.Croix, S-series, G-Loomis and some other brands we have or we can also extend the butt section on a factory made rod. One question I have is why so long on the butt section? Normally we don't get that long until we start reaching 8' or longer. A longer butt section is fine for pullbaits like suicks and when you have a jerkbait rod that is 6'9" or longer. For glidebaits and rods shorter than 6'9", a 13"butt section is ideal and I wouldn't recommend going over 14" as you will start to really throw the balance of the rod off and you will get more fatiqued more easily. If you would like even more info on our rods or modifying factory rods, call and ask for Bill at 763-572-3782. He is one of our owners and has run our Rod Shop for 10 years. Hope this helps, Brett Erickson www.thornebros.com

Posts: 600 Location: West Bend, WI | Brett, the jerkbait rod I have know is a 6'9" I don't feel that the rod tucks under my arm enough.I feel like I don't have good control over my glide baits.I also have a Fig Rig 7'2" MH that has a handle that measures at 14-1/2" plus weight balancer added. With this rod I feel like I have alot more control over the rod tip.(perfect up and down, rather than a slight side to side swing)The problem with that rod is I can only throw somthing like a 6" Hawg with it.So I was looking for something a little heaver.

Plitzz, The Thorne Bros. rods are awsome to use. The cool thing about the rods is that they are built by guys that actually know a lot about muskie fishing. They can set you up for just about any situation you need. Ty

Posts: 1536 Location: God's Country......USA..... Western Wisconsin | I have a couple of the Thornes Diamondbacks as well, sweeeeeeet is all I can say. Talk to Pat about the action you need and then to Bill about the build of the rod. These two guys will steer you in the right direction. Say hello to Brett while you are in the shop as well. Use all the info these gentlemen have and you will be happy as all get out with your new rod for sure. Don't tell Pat I told you however, his head is big enough allready.
