Hey,

I was just wondering if anyone has fished Bone or Deer this year and how well they did. I'm going on the 15th to try my hand at some skis. Also, if you fished it, what baits were best for you?

Thanks,

BrettC[]

Brett, fished Bone in mid June. Saw a lot of fish in different areas but all related to the weedline whether it's shore or mid lake, two were boated. We had a lot of fish to the boat on small gliders but wouldn't go - perhaps they'll be ready to eat now. The fish that were caught came on a chart/black bucktail. Haven't been back since so I don't know what current conditions are.

Fish the weedline, generally around 13-15ft. Pay attention to wind direction and key on wind blown areas. I would run and gun first then go back to where you're seeing fish. I have my best luck on mid lake structure. Don't be afraid to try a little trolling if the weed bite sucks.

Generally speaking, good baits are: Bucks/Spinners, minnow baits, gliders. Perch patterns or chartreuse colored baits seem to be best out there, based on my experience.

Good luck,
Jono

Jono,

Thanks for the help. I was wondering if you hit either of the 2 islands on Bone, and if so what kind of action did you see there.

Thanks again,

The weedlines on Bone are classic for creatures, too. Caught my first legal there a LONG time ago!

Great point Steve! I don't fish jigs much so I spaced that very important detail.

Brett, I do hit the islands. Key on the weedline on the north side of the big one (southernmost), you can work your way from there around to the west and head towards the south tip. There are fish all along there but the best is usually on the north. Weeds tend to taper off as you head to the south.

Be sure to hit the midlake humps too, especially the one next to the deepest water in the lake.

Thanks for your guys help. Steve, I was just wondering if you sit on or just a little out from the weedline and do you cast right on the weedline? What is your approach to this?

Thanks,

BrettC

Jono's right about the weedline on the north of the big island, working around the island, on the west side. My bro got a nice fat 42" release there some years ago, and we've taken numerous 30 inchers in that area.

Our best luck for big fish, however, has been the weed edges on the west side of the lake. Find the buoys running north-south along the west side. These are placed to warn boaters of the shallow sandy/gravel-y north-south bars off the west side of the lake. They are approximately due west of the islands. Head west from the islands and find these buoys on the west side. Work the weed edges facing the middle of the lake, i.e., the deeper edges. With two people in the boat, we usually place the boat on or near the weed edge, and cast parallel with the edge and fancast the deep water, too. One person works a bucktail with black hair and a high vis blade (orange or chartreuse), while the other person works a 6 inch Grandma lure in perch pattern (or some other similar minnow lure like a large shad rap). 25-30 pounders swim in them thar waters! We've also caught 10-12 pound northern pike on the west side, working the weed edge right off the west shore, in the vicinity of the buoys.

Low light conditions (early morning, evenings, night, cloudy) are prime, of course. One evening a friend of ours nabbed a very nice fat fish on a black creeper, working the 'reed island' that is not near the two main island, but is to the south-southwest of the north bay.

I haven't fished it a lot in fall but the Muskies Inc. Lunge Log statistics indicate that action heats up mid to late Sept. and goes until late October or so. Many multiple fish days for some anglers at that time. Perhaps Toddhoss can add to that.

Jono is absolutely correct! Mid September through mid October is prime time on Bone Lake.

Deer Lake does well in the fall, too.

Anybody been having any luck on either of these two lately?
What have the latest patterns been?

What advise would you give someone thats never fished this lake before? I'm planning a trip for Oct. 12. Should I concentrate on creatures/jerkbaits? Gliders or Divers? Anybody had any luck on anything else this late into the fall? What about topwater?

Thanks

Brett, I guide on both bodies of water. This time of year go with a jerk bait in Perch or Walleye pattern on the greenest coontail beds you can find. Or my personal favorite is to run a "Porky" jig and lizard combo in the same areas. Don't forget to work that jig on the rocks as the fish can really gang up on those spots.

Fished Bone on Saturday 10/20. Boated 1, lost 1, saw 1. Kinda slow. Both fish hooked on Suckers. Nothing real big. Water temps were 52-53 F.

Fished bone sunday the 21st. Great day. We got three. One 39, 42 , 44 inches. They came on cranks and bucktails in 8-10ft. The two bigger ones were caught around the islands. Just about everyone we saw a at least one sucker out.
