Posts: 1438 | We have the post about what airbrush type you use. So I figured I'd be the first to ask the next obvious question. What type of paint are you using out of your airbrush and where are you getting it from? I have been using Testors enamel model paint with a double coat of Envirotex Lite on the few baits that I have done so far. It has worked OK but I am wondering about durability on a "model" paint. The model paints also limit the color selection too. I do have a friend who owns a body shop and I could get auto laquer but I have a closed workshop in the basement with no way to vent. So, unless I could move to the garage, I don't think that would be a good idea. I was checking the web and found some paints through some of the taxidermy suppliers that looked pretty awesome. Some of the translucents and irridescents were unbelievable. But again, what about durability? So what do all you other guys use??? Scott Edited by theedz155 2/14/2004 7:49 AM

Posts: 938 Location: NeverNever Lake | Createx acrylics. Every color under the rainbow and then some. Pretty sure that's what Hughes River's have on them. Works well with all brands of epoxy clear coats. http://www.createxcolors.com/index2.htm

Posts: 941 Location: Freedom, WI | What Raze said, Createx paints and they can be cleaned with water and I have no problem with venting for fresh air. They do need to be clear coated for the color to look the best. I have switched to a tougher industrial floor epoxy (pricey though) for clear coating and it works with that and envirotex.

Posts: 317 Location: Grafton, WI | The Createx paint works great, as the previous posts already stated. It comes out of the airbrush nice, cleans easily, and once it gets coated with Envirotex... looks awesome. Attachments ---------------- 3.jpg (93KB - 265 downloads)

Posts: 93 Location: Waukesha, WI. | I use car laquer right now. I am looking to change to something else. What happens to createx when the clear coat comes off, will the paint come off with it? I am having a hard time with water base, and the fact that I am going to put the bait in the water. What does a bait look like after you catch a fish or two or three? Can any one put up a picture of one of there baits painted with createx after they have some fish on it?

Posts: 1137 Location: Holly, MI | What is the cost of Envirotex and where do you get it? I have been using Flex-Coat. It goes on nice and smmoth and seems pretty hard. It is used by rod builders to cover the wrapping. It basically is a 2 part epoxy but it dries very slow so it flows out smooth. Is envirotex a two part? All my spraying has been out of spray cans of enamel. Use a white base coat tho first. It will make your colors brighter.

Posts: 1438 | Sounds like I need to try Createx. Envirotex should be available at most any hardware store. I got mine at one of the local True Value Hardware Stores. It is a two part liquid plastic. I have had little or no problems working with it. Scott

| I'm curious about this paint stuff, too... I've used Createx on some wood baits and coated them with Envirotex or similar, but I haven't really beat them up. it's been asked but not answered: how is the durability once the epoxy starts to get beat-up? I imagine the primer coat makes a big difference? What do you guys use? It seems to me that a really tough primer would help a lot. Can you get something in a spray can to do a lot of baits at once without messing with the airbrush? Finally, what about PLASTIC baits? I want to re-paint some Jakes and others. I know that it can be tough to get paint to stick on plastic baits... Thanks! John | |||

Posts: 941 Location: Freedom, WI | I have used a spray can primer and it seems to do OK. With plastic baits I have done a few for MuskieE and it seemed fine. I will be painting a few Jakes for a friend and and I will see how it works on them.

Posts: 1438 | I did have problems with the Testors paint on a Jake. It was a holoform Jake though and I think that part of the problem was glue residue from the holoform tape had compromised the plastic somehow. I painted a regular Ernie and had no problems with that. I use a sanding sealer as a base on all the wood baits I paint and the first coat over the sealer is always a standard white. That seem combination seems to be working OK. I was thinking about trying an epoxy base coat instead and see how that goes. Scott Edited by theedz155 2/16/2004 9:54 PM

Posts: 4266 | I've always used the Testors enamel. Though flourescent colors are limited, if you're looking for natural patterns, you can really get creative. Lately I've been doing a lot with pearls and metallics. There's a hobby shop not far from my house with an awesome selection of pearl colors. And when you add Envirotex over them, the pearls and metallics really get more vibrant.
