Some lakes are open in MN and I am curious if I can legally do any muskie fishing before the water hits spawning temperature. I know I would be catch and release only, as the season opens in June. Anyone else fish early like this?

I prefer not breaking the law. You can always Panfish.

Then I apologize for the sarcasm... the skeptic in me assumed that it was common knowledge that targeting game fish during a closed season was illegal. Have an exceptional evening.

The itch gets pretty bad right now, so I'll preempt your next question: no, removing hooks and casting for muskies still qualifies as harassment of wildlife.

There are Musky in the Mississippi further north depending on where you are- I'm not sure of season is closed there as well but you can always cast big lures to target Pike....

Season is closed statewide, including rivers. Pike as well are closed until May.

That's for inland waters- the Mississippi river is considered a border water and Pike season is continuous. (at least where I am I suppose it could be different further north?)

MN Pike season is same as Walleye, May 14 - Feb 26

The Mississippi is only considered a border water south of the Prescott bridge, and yes Pike are open then.
