Took all my latches out and took them apart to clean them, as none of them would turn anymore. All the o rings came out in pieces. Anybody out there who has redone their latches have any idea what size o rings I need to buy? The guy at the hardware store was less than useful, even though I brought one of the latches with me, showed him how it works and where the rings need to fit and why. Should be a simple thing, but without an intact o-ring to use for reference he didn't have a clue what to do. It didn't help that their entire inventory was all mixed in together.

Don't know the size, but I'd try an auto parts store. They should have a good selection of O-rings.

Maybe find out who manufactures them and make contact.

Find a better hardware store. That's pathetic.

If you have the approximate OD & & ID required for your application, I can't imagine that you can't find them in a decent hardware or auto parts store.

I figured it would be a 10 minute deal. Yep, that's the size, give me a dozen. Thank you.

Nooo. I hate to spend $30 each to replace the latches when all I need is $5 worth of o rings to do the whole thing. Called a few auto parts stores. They all want to know which automotive part it fits so they can look up the right part number.

I asked the guy "Can't I just go through what you have, find the one I need and buy a bunch of them?" "Well, sir, we need to know what part it is for. Can I have the year make and model of your vehicle?"

It's a BOAT dude. Ranger. Not the Ford kind. Boat. You know, BWAAAA across the water?

*sigh*

This just re-enforces my belief that there are fewer and fewer people out there every day that actually know anything, or will take the 5 minutes to find out...

This thread reinforces (correct spelling) your above statement.

We're talking about an O-ring, not rocket science. C'mon man!

Check with Ranger. That's where I bought the latch assemblies and gaskets when I redid a few of mine a few years ago.

The Ziegler's Ace in SE is very helpful...the one on Lillian St. is really good.

Here is what I did I went to a harbor freight and got a box O-rings, one of those sizes in there will fit, you may have to get more than 1 box because you may more of that size o-ring for your latches. The box costs around $5 or so think, not very much.

Where is the o-ring located? What purpose does it serve?

There are two o-rings that go on the piece on the right, which fits into the piece in the center. The purpose of these is to seal that area so water does not leak through the latch and into the compartments. What often happens is that over time, dirt and sand work their way down into the latch making it impossible to turn. Usually a good cleaning and a bit of silicone grease is all you need to get the latches working again. In my case, the o-rings had disintegrated over time and came out in pieces. Everything I found at the hardware store was fine as far as inside diameter, but they were all too thick for the pieces to fit back together. If I had one o-ring still intact, matching them up would be simple, but they all came out in bits.

The folks at Ranger said they were Perko latches. The fine folks at Perko assured me that those were definitely NOT Perko latches, because Perko latches do not have o-rings. Nothing in the Perko inventory matches these, so I am pretty sure they were right.

The only thing I've found that looks pretty close to these is a company called T-H Marine. The folks at T-H Marine do not answer their phone, return phone calls, or answer e-mails, so I'm back to square one.

Find a bearing store. Bearing headquarters, bearing distributors, motion industries, etc. O-rings have industry standard numbers. You will need the old to know the thickness and the diameter of each ring. Should be a 3 minute process. I have a sizing tool at work if you need help.
