Posts: 129 Location: Bemidji, MN- | Four years ago I bought some 65# PP, used it for a year and reversed it. Two years ago I did the same with 80#. I've never had a line break on either, but on my next purchase I was wondering whether I should go to 100# for a bit more margin of safety. I notice 80# seems to be the line of choice on most of the bulletin boards, so I'm wondering - has anyone found a downside to the 100#?

Posts: 129 | I use 100# for all my rods now and enjoy it alot, I found that 80# was too weak and that it snapped (on occasion) when I really whipped the baits casting. This year I am trying other lines and will make a final decision, but PP is an excellent line and I will use it till I find something better. Musk.

When I used 50, it would cut into itself quite often. So far so good with the 65. I have 80lb on the 6501, and have no problems with that. Ive pulled trees out of the shore of rivers with the 65. I cant really see it breaking very easily. Of course, we dont get the monster musky over my way either.

Posts: 654 Location: MPLS, MN | What do you mean by cutting into it on the 50#? I use the 65# PP on one rod and 50# PP on the other and never had a problem. I have only fished skies for 2 seasons though?

![]() Posts: 131 Location: Kalamazoo, MI | The 50lb always had a tendancy to dig into itself on me. Especially on hooksets or when working with lures that put a lot of slack in the line. The 65lb has never done this to me.

Posts: 743 | Otter, i only use 100 pound...can't think of any downfalls to it compared to the 80 pound...

Posts: 1430 Location: Eastern Ontario | I was using both and now only use the 80# stuff. The only downfall of the 100 # test is that it has a thincker diameter, cost more and holds more water. Those are not that big of a deal and the only reason I now only use 80# test is simplicity of having the same line on all reels.

Posts: 51 Location: Sheboygan Falls, WI | There is one downfall to #100. If you would be so lucky as to catch a world record, it would be recognized by the Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame (provided it was caught on the Chip) and wouldn't be recognized by the "other" record keeping body because muskies is limited to #80 test line. It would be funny though because it would mean a whole new controversy as to what is the world record.

Posts: 124 Location: Rice Lake,WI | I have used 80 for a few years and loved it. Last season starting using 100 and have yet to find a downfall as the diameter is only slightly larger. Best line on the market as far as I'm concerned, especially if you are fishing everyday.

Posts: 44 | I am going to Gander tonight to pick up some 80#. They have 300 yard spools for $31.99. I have three 5500C's and want to fill them all. How can I figure out how much backing to leave on the reels to fill them to the proper height on the spool? I don't want to put it on and have to take it off again or cut it too short and not have enough for all three reels. Thanks

Posts: 20248 Location: oswego, il | I use 80lb for bucktail/crankbaits and 100lb for my jerkbaits. I am using wide spool reels. Have used 65lb and had alot of broken line backlashes.

About the 80 vs 100 and the next world record, the IGFA states that 80 is the max line you can use when attempting a line class record, and 100 is ok to use when attempting to register for an all tackle world record muskie. Leaders can be of any strength but length including the lure must max out at 6 feet( it may be five though) I've questioned the IGFA about this issue and recieved answers clearing the air about lines. They even state that a world record, if properly photo'd, measured, weighed on a scale ( on land ) that was certified by them ( a Chattilon), would be admissable. No corpse would be needed. Now, wouldn't that stir the pot even more...

What I forgot to add to my previous post, was that the record fish could be released after proper documentation.
