What's the best way to fish for musky and pike with bass plastics? Mostly what is the best way to set up your leader. You loose some action with a wire and fluorocarbon obivously will break with the teeth. Thanks for the help.

I would not worry about losing action from a wire leader. IN fact, it may help with action due to the thinness of it.

It also depends if you are going to do a lot of ripping, or you are going to finesse you're plastics.

I use 2 different types of leader for fishing creatures. There is a twist weld material that's really easy to use...with this I use 30lb test. Also use a 40lb test, 49 strand coated by AFW. This 49 strand is easy to tie a knot.

Your other option would be a 60lb in seven strand. Slices weeds nicely:)

Don't think the musky cares, or for that matter bass what leader you are using.

You could even go to a 20 lb twist weld if you going to finesse baits through weeds. if you are ripping, the 20lb  lasted me about 4 hours until it failed.

Travis, Pour about 30 different patterns, some with a thicker stem for ripping, and some with a thinner stem for finessing. twister tails, split tails, paddle tails,+ creature spins. You need pics, send me your email. My creature pics keep getting deleting, wonder why?

Thanks,

JD

I prefer to use 15 to 20 lb floro-carbon line, no leader... I lose a few, but I get way more bites than I do with a leader. I have fished with and without leaders several times a year and have had way better success without a leader. As far as rod and reel I use an 8 foot flipping stick and bass reel...

The leader makes zero difference.

I use 7 straond 60#, and have for several decades.

I like 17# mono and a medium heavy 6.5' to 7' spinning rod. Sticks 'em and whips 'em fast.

sworrall-
I have seen a huge difference in strike ratio while sight fishing for muskies. With a leader attached my number of strikes is maybe a tenth of that without a leader. This is my experience anyways on a super clear body of water. Maybe on a darker water lake it would make less difference...
Not trying to dispute your info, just relaying my experience.

Using 7 strand, I have never seen a difference, and have been fishing jigs and plastics for over 45 years. Clear water, too. Solid wire messes up the presentation, I would not use that stuff. Make sure the leader material is about the same flexibility as the line you are using.

The fish do not care.

Hey guys I was thinking about buying a new setup for this purpose but I've got a ton of bass setups. The one I was thinking about using is a 7'3 mh veritas 2.0 and a Lews tournament mg has 14 drag and 20lb fluro will this work good ? I hate to waste money.

JD,
What knot do you recommend for the 49 strand?

Jaimey, I use the same knot that bucher uses on his leaders. Don't know what it's called...sorry! if you call me, I'll take you through it.

or you can come over and I'll show you, or can show you at the next MI meeting.

Mr. Worrall ; What is your opinion on Hook size???   Seems like guys are wanting these sizes in that 7/0-9/0 sizes. I can see that if using larger profile / plastics, BUT;

Bet your pyramid/ stand-up  jigs have a 2/0-5/0 size hook.

IMO, smaller hooks stick, and will hold better, and less chance for the fish to throw the jig. + they suck them in easier! Most hooks I use are a 3/0-5/0 size sproat hook, then a 5/0-6/0 for a larger jig like the 3/4oz size.

 Thanks,

 JD

Yup. 2/0 to 5/0 from 1/4 to 1 ounce. I tried bigger hooks and they didn't pin up as nice.

If anyone gets the chance to take one of worralls poolside demo classes. I highly recommend it. He did a great job showing how to work plastics and the set ups he uses. Also a lot of other great tips on lure presentations to setting the hook. If you attend his class you'll so know I'm talking about.

I like to use 20-30 lb singlestrand titanium for my super light presentations. Would like to try the 7 strand titanium some day
