I was wondering if anyone has had this happen or know a fix. I took my boat out the only day and my minn Kota foot pedal was acting up. Everything works on it but the right side which functions the right turn of the motor. I tried pushing hard and looking inside the spring but have not taken it apart yet. Should I check out the inside or the connection. Please let me know what you think, if anything.

Thanks in advance

I assume power drive pedal? You'll likely need to replace the pedal. Check out Fishlectronics of Fridley, MN. They have an ebay store too. I think they have the best price on replacement pedals. They also do repairs so last time in I asked if there was anything to do and they said nope. Likely wore a groove in the board. I always carry two pedals in the boat.

Thanks for your input on this topic. I will try all that was suggested. If anyone else has an opinion on this, I am still open to hear them.

Thanks

If it is the Minn Kota Powerdrive, you are kind of up the creek. Went through repeated pedals within two years. One of the pedals went out on the first day. It would not turn right, only left. The representative from Minn Kota said to try not to get it wet! The motor itself works great, but as mentioned earlier, the pedals are a major weak link.

Take it apart and clean it. Make sure you get all the sand out... Then take a small piece of cardboard and put it under the little pop up nipple on the contol baord. You should be able to tell which one works for each function. Before you put the springs back in test it out.If still not working try and push the nipple by hand,if it works add more material to the nipple,if it doesn't work then get a new foot pedal.

Cleaning does work. Personally I've never needed to add a piece of cardboard...

Take it apart and clean it. I replaced pedals the first couple times but when one only lasts six months that isn't right. Open it up and clean all of the conacts. I rinsed the dirt off then wiped off anything that was left and finally spread a very thin layer of dielectric grease on the contacts. Put it back together and it's good as new. Especially if you're just going to throw it out I would try to clean it. Otherwise let me know, I'll take it.

I have 5 broken foot pedals. Very frustrating. Sent email to minn kota and they were not very helpful.

unfortunately when they go they go....time to get a new one.. one thing I do think makes a difference when trailering put the foot pedal in a compartment and keep as much dust/dirt/grime off it as possible...i can usually get a year maybe more now doing that on one.

Seriously, when it stops turning to one side take it apart and clean it. It WILL work again. The springs can be a little bit of a pain to get back in but be patient. Next time I have to do it I will take pictures and make a tutorial. I used to replace my pedal at least once a year too until I tried fixing it. You would be surprised the amount of dirt that gets in there and also dirty water spots from dried lake water... not real good conductors.

I guess I would rather spend 30 minutes of my time than $60 on a new pedal.

FYI: A MinnKota repair guy I know told me (unofficially) to hold the pedal by the cord and jig it in the water for a minute. This will wash a bunch of the dirt out and many times will make it work temporarily. Once the water dries inside it will leave dirty water marks again and likely stop working again. If this is the case, a good cleaning of the internal contacts will fix the problem.

jiggling in the water works but only for so long... even cleaning them can't make them all work...trust me i've tried.
when you put 100s hours on them a year they break

I've had good luck and only needed to replace one so far. I fish a lot and think the first made it 4 years. When mine stopped turning one way, it STOPPED. Took it apart and cleaned, dunked it in the lake. Nothing, done. New foot pedal was the answer, unfortunately.

I'd try to clean it, but wouldn't fight it too much if it doesn't work. My guess is if cleaning it gets it working again, I'd be tempted to get a spare as I'd have the feeling it would only be a matter of time before it's done for good.

You can save $20 by just buying the board and using your existing plastic parts. I never replaced the whole pedal when I had powerdrives.
