| Can someone recommend a good mini torch for use in the boat to repair rubber baits? I need one that will ignite and stay lit consistently, even in cold damp weather.

Location: North/Central WI | I've had a couple different mini butane torches (or crack torches as we call them). I just got a new one for about $25 at Fleet Farm a month or so ago. It works great for repairing rubber no matter what the conditions. I will check the brand name and post it. I think any small butane torch should get the job done though. |

Location: Pewaukee, Wisconsin | I use the Portasol Torch 220. It works equally well repairing rubber baits, melting heat shrink tubing on hooks, and light wire soldering when wire repairs are needed on the boat. |

Location: North/Central WI | Jaimey (Jballs) gave me the first torch I had and it lasted for a couple years, so I know that is a good one. It finally broke after being tossed from my boat to a buddies boat one too many times. Here is a triple-tail pounder I made with my new torch last week.

the problem with the butan torches are the high temperatures. More than 200°C is to hot for soft plastic. The best way to repair your soft baits is to do this at home and use a "SMD Hot Air Rework Solder Station" with a 2 or 3 mm nozzle. You can buy such a hot air solder station for example on ebay for about 60 $ or a little more. This work very well. If you have a deep cut in the plastic, blow the hot air into the cut and then compress it firmly.

Lighters and torches that work great in July are not performing for me in November. Mine will burn just long enough to get half the repair job done and then quit... which is such a TEASE when you want to get the HOT bait back in the water for another bite before the window closes. Sure, one solution is to have spare lures so when one goes down you can repair it in the cabin at the end of the day.... but? |

| why not get a propane torch Jason? I also have a Benzomatic torch I keep in the boat..always lights and works in cold temps

| Brad, I understand that propane burns cleaner than butane and therefore leaves less burn marks on the treated rubber?? Since you've been using propane, can you confirm/deny this? The propane has appeal to me, for sure.

| I've used my Benzomatic torch quite a bit..works fine...no issues w melting the plastics back together...only thing is keep a cookie sheet or tinfoil or something in the boat to do the work on ! ; ) |

than try out an "flameless butane lighter" from the outdoor shop. You can find them on ebay, too. But this little lighter have one problem. They are very little. So they become warm in some seconds. You can use them maybe for about five or ten seconds but not longer.
