when and how do you fish spinnerbaits? What size is your favourite for pike/musky?

Spinnerbaits are one the most versatile lures that many Muskie anglers do not take advantage of! You can fish them deep or shallow!

There are quite a few out there! I like 1 oz Grim Reapers, but the smaller ones work great too!

I like the Rad Dogs. Very versatile in weeds and timber...

1 oz are a good all around bait. I like the single hook when the weeds are heavy. They are excellant for running the deep edges or running the tops then fluttering down the edge. Keep the line tight when dropping the bait down the edge for when they hit it on the decent.

I have spinnerbaits that weigh from 1 oz to 4 oz. Made by a varity of companies. I know that I have over 50 spinnerbaits but have lost count. I like the old M/G spinnerbaits but you can't get them anymore. I also like Marv's spinnerbaits and just bought my first Shumway funky chicken and raddogs. I like all of them. The 4oz ones I forget the name of but Thorne Bros carries them, they should be able to help you if you want them.

As pointed out, spinnerbaits are versitile. You can bulge them on the surface or slow roll them in 20+ feet of water. You can also troll them over the weed tops. Quite often when I'm fishing a new lake and want to learn the weedline and dropoff quickly, I will troll a spinnerbait. They allow me to troll the weedline without constantly hanging up and having to reel in to clear weeds off of the bait. Once I have learned where the turns and points in the weedline are I can then go back and either troll or cast with deep diving crankbaits without fouling up near as much as if I had used them at first.

Trolling spinnerbaits are a great way to cover very large weedbeds that would take all day to fish if you were casting. Areas like Vineland Bay on Mille Lacs can be covered over and over again looking for the active fish.

I also like to slow roll them along a deep weedline or drop off that I couldn't get another bait down to. That's where the 4oz baits come in handy. You can get them down to 15 to 25 feet and keep them on the bottom without waiting all day for them to sink.

fishpoop, I also like to troll them to cover large areas. What has been your most productive speed for a one ounce tandem blade, fishing shallow, not deep slow rolling? Northland Bionic Bucktails in particular, if you use them.

I use 1.5oz spinnerbait frames available at moore's lures and dress them with large colorado blades and musky-sized rubber skirts + a bass-sized skirt underneath the big one to create more of a flare. Works great. I use them for shore-fishing (they cast a mile + stay relatively shallow) and for fishing weed beds. I also flutter them into pockets but to no avail so far.

I am going to try trolling them but they are a killer for your arms! We'll see, I may have to switch to large willowbladed ones or some with just one blade.

Which ones work best: rubber skirted or bucktails?

I met Tony Galluci who lives up in the Toronto area a couple years ago who is the maker of Beaver Lures and has spinnerbaits up to 4oz. Quite popular up there.
The other ones I like are Shumway, Grim Reaper. The other ones talked about here are worth a look too!

Take a look at the Violent Strike Spinnerbaits (advertising button onsite at MuskieFIRST). Violent Strike makes baits for Pike, Muskie, and Bass, and is innovating all the time. I just got some cool blades from Beav to send out to Brian that may make a tremendous trolling lure.[:sun:]

I got my last five fish, including 2 two fish days, on spinner baits. I like to use a No.8 colorado blade and a twin tail grub and flutter it over deep breaks or in the wide open abyss for suspendo's.

Otter:

Can't say as I have used the bionic bucktail, but have seen them and they are similar to the old M/G spinnerbaits in size and weight. Head shape is different but I don't think it matters to much in this instance as all the lift is provided by the blades.

I don't troll them very fast, say around 2.5 to 3 m.p.h. tops. Much faster than that and they lay over on their sides rather than riding upright in the water. I don't know if laying on their sides would make the fish not hit, but for me it's a confidence thing. The bait is supposed to run upright and when it lays over I lose confidence in it and slow back down. Hope that answers your question.
