This is my Rocket Shad profile painted in an Alewife pattern.
I'm going to be building a handful of these for sale later this winter. I've started them,
but I won't be building much during whitetail archery season (my other passion).

The paint utilized for the alewife was 100% pearls except for the white on the tip of the fin and gill plate and the black dot. The eyes are hand made.

The high-end pearl paints just don't photograph easily; its hard to capture what they look like in ordinary daylight. You can see toward the tail of the bait a bit of how the colors shift and change.

Hope you like it:

hey,
Anyway you would be willing to sell any of these baits? The muskie lake i fish is stacked with herring (alewife) in the 4-6" range. The muskie suspend under these pods of herring and gorge themselves and i havent found a good bait that will dive about 5 feet and wont blow out when casting or trolling. Anyway you could help?

Thanks, you guys.

The Rocket Shad will not blow out when trolled at speeds up to about 5 1/2 to 6 mph. and can easily be used for casting also. If you have Alewives. this might be just what the doctor ordered.

Check your pm's.

Sweet indeed!!! How long are they? Any idea how deep they will go? I'm looking for a couple of nice mid-size (9"-10") deep diving baits in a good shad pattern.

Thanks

Thanks, Sworall.

Roughneck, the batch I'm starting will be deep divers, which will easily run from 5 to 20 feet depending on how much line you let out when trolling. I would say about 25 to 27 feet of line will get the Rocket Shad down 10 or 11 feet.

The Rocket Shad is 6 inches long from the nose to the tail.

Just wondering, how thick are those rockett shads and does that have to do with why they don't blow out at high speed?

The Rocket Shads are about 5/8 inch thick.

That they are not terribly prone to blow out is a function of the body shape and size, lip style, weighting, and balance built into the bait (or any bait for that matter).

It can also be a matter of physics to a degree. Sometimes a bait is so small, it does no present enough mass to remain submerged and balanced when torqued by the line at speeds above a certain level. At other times, the mass of a larger bait creates so much resistance that it wants to escape the torque at certain speeds and be prone to blow out. Trying to achieve that balance while still maintaining speed is a matter of balancing a number of variables and a shot of luck can help too.

It seems like there is a continuum over which linear changes to the variables work for a while, but along that continuum, there are places where the numbers seem to warp and changing the size of the bait, the lip, etc can no longer be done on a linear basis.
