I LOVE mine. It moves big blades, to the point of shooting them out of the water if you aren't careful. I would definitely recommend the Saltist 30 HA over the Calcutta B or the Toro simply for the price and performance. I spend 4-5 days on the water (5 hour shifts usually) and have had the Saltist for 2 months without anything breaking on me, yet. Also, my catch rate has gone up significantly now that I can move baits much faster than I could with my 7000iHSN.

Posts: 115 Location: Birch Run | Great reel, did manage to break lever spring. Daiwa had it back for free in 3 weeks. You however must learn not to overcast this reel and adjust the brake tension a little tighter than on a normal reel, and the maual engaging is easy after a trip.

Posts: 743 | Tightening up the tension and not overcasting. Does that make for shorter casts than we would like?

Posts: 315 | 2 tips.......tighten the cast control and dont fill the line to the top. (had some backlash problems to start) thing moves big blades with ease (i have the 30) i used and abused that thing up in canada for a week with no issues and i love it. next year im gonna buy my st croix sling blade and i think ill be set = ) -ba-

Location: Twin Cities | How does a week of using a reel justify it to be "a good reel"...let us know if you get 2 seasons without a problem...that goes for ANY reel, especially the toro's and saltists...

Just got my 20 in the mail today. Was going to return for the 30 because I thought the 20 would be bigger than it was. I'm going to give it try and if I don't like it my kids can use to burn blades and I'll order a 30 for myself.

Posts: 1460 Location: Kronenwetter, WI | The 30 has nearly the same retrieve ratio as the 40 but is much smaller. I ran a 40 last season and it was so tall on the reel seat I had an issue with the severe angle at which the line must some off the spool in order to pass through the first line guide on the rod. I went 30 lw this year...only issue is the spring on the lever release seems to have broke, but it still works. Also kinda finicky on the spool tension, especially casting into the wind can be prone to backlashes. Edited by Cowboyhannah 9/2/2009 9:09 PM

The tall 30 without a levelwind has the same line pickup as a 40 with levelwind. Similar to a trinidad 16N but not in the same league at all. A 30 with levelwind has 36 inches of line pickup, same as a 20LW, and the 40 LW has 46-47 when full. With any saltist, you need a good thumb, that's for sure.

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | Is the 40lw the same height as the 30 lw? Anyone using the 40lw, and care to comment on comfort/durability so far? One thing to note, the 30 LW will have a bit more line pick-up than the 20lw, simply because of the wider spool. I did use the 20 for a week or so and was very impressed with the line pick-up on it, and feel, compared to my Penns. A friend bought the 30LW and likes it as well. He did break the idler gear(his fault) and has a minor 'clicking' issue that comes and goes. As a side note, a friend bought one of the Avet non level wind reels, using it this whole season so far without issue. I will look hard at both the Avet and Saltist before deciding for next year, while busily reading what others experience with both have been after a season or two. Changed my mind. Returned the 20H back to my local gander mountain store and order a 30lw. The 20 just didn't feel right(to small).
