Posts: 814 | The Best? Well that's everyone own opinion. The Loomis 25 gets my vote! I threw the loomis all year in 08. Never thrown the slingblade....after I tried the steels I sold all my Croix's. And yes you can do fast figure 8's with a trinidad and a supermodel without the rod already being loaded. Edited by mskyhntr 1/28/2009 8:12 PM

Posts: 4343 Location: Smith Creek | I tried to compare specs, checked the gloomis web site... didn't find anything. Anyway, I haven't used a gloomis since they sold out to Shimano so I can't compare but the Sling blade is the best twin blade rod I have ever used.

Posts: 401 | Slingblade and here is why. Added strength without adding material or weight. I attached what is on the St Croix web site about their design. To most that might not mean anything...to me it is the reason I like St Croix. Last thing.....American made. Best blank on the market made in the middle of musky country with American employees. That means something to me. "As you may know, most high-performance rods are designed using compound tapers that employ three to four measured transition points along the blank where the slope of the taper changes. Those same transition points, however, can also create points of weakness on the blank. That's where our revolutionary Integrated Poly Curve® (IPC®) Tooling Technology comes in. Developed exclusively by St. Croix, Integrated Poly Curve® (IPC®) technology has rapidly become the engineering leader in rodmaking. Designed to eliminate all transitional points in the rod blank, IPC-engineered rods feature smoother actions, increased strength and greater sensitivity" "Advanced Reinforcing Technology™ (ART™) is an exotic carbon fiber material that adds a magnitude (10X) of strength with virtually no increase in blank diameter or weight. ART significantly improves the hoop strength of the blank by preventing it from deforming or “ovaling” under a severe load, such as a powerful hook set or fish battle. ART is also a critical part of our slim-profile ferrule design." Edited by Professional Edge 1/29/2009 10:08 AM

I've handled both but not fished either one. I don't know which one you will like better, but I can tell you the slingblade is stiffer than the steel. Both have pretty fast actions. The steel has about the same power as a heavy diamondback. I'm actually going to get a steel 20 for big blades, and a steel 25 for mag dawgs and big cranks.

Posts: 2024 | Hopefully Frank Bottiglieri sees this and can chime in since he builds on both blanks. Or you could try emailing him direct at [email protected].

Posts: 814 | Brad no problem, I am sure I'll see ya on the water. I have 2 steel 25's and am having a 20 built as I speak. I bought the 25's at the begining of 08. The slingblade wasn't even out yet. my best description of the 25 is It's light and sensitive and has the nice tip like a diamondback but has the durability of the St. Croix. I have not thrown the slingblade yet. I am sure its nice.....I was told through thornes that the slingblade is the same as the big dawg just with a softer tip. Plus the steel is about 50-60 bucks cheaper for a 9 footer and every bit just as good as the croix, I took advice from several welll known guides who were using this blank before thornes had them advertised and I couldn't be happier with my decision. Posts: 72 | Here is another vote for both the steel 25 for double 10s and the steel 20 for smaller bucks, spinnerbaits and twitchbaits. I used them both all last year and agree with the comments on the action. They do not load up even on the fastest figure 8s. Very light, very strong. That being said, I'm sure the slingblade is a great rod as well.

Posts: 375 | the "steel 25 doesn't load up on the fastest figure 8"...for those that have used the legend big dawg for db 10's does it load up on the fastest 8? could "one" say their actions are similar?

Posts: 84 Location: Buffalo Grove, IL | I am having this exact same decision making process right now as well and it sounds like you can't really go wrong with either one. I have been leaning towards a custom rod from Thorne Bros with the Steel 25 blank. Getting a rod on the St. Croix blank is a bit too much for me so it would have to be the factory made Slingblade rod and is sounds like it's usually better to go custom. Is that the general consensus? Thanks!

Posts: 1184 Location: Iowa Great Lakes | I'm also looking at 1 of these rods. I called Lonnie at Thorne Bros the other day, pricewise the Steel was a little cheaper can be built out longer than the factory Sling Blade. Also informed me hes working on a Thorne rod thats comparable to the Steel and Sling Blade and hopes to have a few ready in 4-6 weeks so waiting till the Expo to finger all 3 and buy what feels best to me.
