Location: So. Illinois | Is anyone using a hand-held GPS for auto and marine applicaitons? A friend told me about the Lowrance XOG. Anyone familiar with this unit that can provide feedback? Are there any others our there that you would recommend? I appreciate any info anyone cares to share.

Location: Land of the Musky | I have a Garmin 76CS with lakemaps in it and it is great. Don't use it mcuh now taht I have a 522iGPS but I do liek it for my buddies to see the lake or when hunting. |

| Lowrance Expedition w/ Navionics and Map Create. Unit seems to be fast enough and I have had good luck with the chips. No turn by turn navigation is about the only thing I don't like. |

Location: North Saint Paul, MN | The only reason to get the Lowrance XOG is if you want to have turn-by-turn navigation in your vehicle. Otherwise I would go with the Lowrance Expedition. You can use it to fish and hunt. You can pretty much do everything with it except put it in your vehicle.
If you are looking for one you can use in your vehicle as well the XOG is the one you want. It is a great unit. You can put Lakemaster and Navionics chips in it. It does everything the other handhelds do. |

| I use the expedition in the car all the time. Map Create maps are very detailed and show everything. Just don't have turn by turn navigation.
Edit: MapCreate shows a lot of info like restaurants, gas stations, hotels, etc. Very nice to have in the car.

Location: North Saint Paul, MN | True...mapcreate does show all of those things but that's another $150 or so add on. With the XOG you're getting all of that built in already for less than what an Expedition costs. If you're looking for one to use in the car and boat I think the XOG is the way to go. |

Location: Johnsonville, Wisconsin | You may want to check into the XOG carefully before considering. I was interested in one and was warned off by a salesman at one of the big sports retail stores - said that MANY were retrurned soon after purchase for frequent lockups. I had to trust someone who didn't want to sell me a product that was right there on the counter. He also said that if I did want to buy, just go to the Bargain Cave at Cabelas as there were plenty of them there......

Location: North Saint Paul, MN | I work part-time for a local Sporting Goods store. We have sold a lot of the XOG's and I haven't seen one come back or even heard of them freezing up right after purchase. Maybe there was a bad batch of them made, but I haven't seen any come back to our store.

Location: So. Illinois | Thanks to everyone who replied. I looked at all recommended units today and opted for the XOG due to the in-car navigation. I talked with the store rep and he stated he had heard of a few problems but felt it was a solid unit. I am going to give it a shot, if I have problems, I can return it without a problem.

| I have the expedition with lakemaps chip, very accurate, matches the depthfinder perfectly
downside, small screen is hard to view and very tough to see in any sun. Expect the same for the xog, am looking at biting the bullet and getting a full size unit. |

| Lowrance Explorer with Navionics chip.
Wouldn't mind a larger screen but it was a huge step up from my older handheld which did not take map chips. Need to be at 1/4 mile resolution for the update to be fast enough when running at cruising speeds. |
