Last night marks the 7th fish out of the last 8 fish to come off the hooks in the past 5 outtings from my boat.. Hooks are sharp, drag is good, they just keep coming off for one reason or another.. People in my boat and myself only lost 4 fish total between July and August this year, now it seems that every opportunity turns into frustration.. Many of the fish are boatside, but so where the fish in July and August... I remember 2 years ago around this time I missed 9 fish in a row, over a 2 week perod all on topwater... What is your longest losing steak??

Posts: 189 Location: Hoboken, NJ / North Webster, IN | I had a 20" Sirloin once....that's probably my longest. ![]() Sorry, couldn't help it. In the Indiana Tournament this year we were blanked going into day 3, then I caught fire like I'd never done before....had 5 fish on in 45 minutes, and 3 other blow ups. Anyway, 3 of the 5 fish shook the hooks at the boat. I honestly can think of that happening once or twice in the last 5 years let alone in 20 minutes. Stuff happens!! Those two boat side hook shakes were the difference between 21st and 4th!!!

Posts: 127 Location: Brookfield | Believe me I feel your pain, so far this year I have had 13 come unglued and boated only 6. I just got home from a frustating outing, I had 2 bust on a pacemaker with-in 5 minutes of each other. Both fish came out of the water with the lure sitting on top of their heads, you can visualize the rest. I decided to eat something so I drifted over 40 feet of water and had a mid 40's swim right next to my boat at the surface. But it's still beats workin. NUT

Posts: 355 Location: Wausau, Wisconsin | It's a strange, strange thing. This spring I couldn't loose a fish at all. Hooks were like a magnet. Then I went super cold and lost a pile of fish for two months. Now for the past month I've been lucky and haven't lost one! I think it's just that little piece of musky mysteria that keeps you right on the line of loosing your mind. From what I can tell, I didn't do anything different. Posts: 1938 Location: Black Creek, WI | Here's my take. If you are surviving the hookset and losing fish after doing some battle with them.... review what YOU are doing. If you simply can't stick them at first contact, chalk that up to bad luck. If you are losing fish at boatside try the following: 1. Avoid turning the fish around (don't let them change directions). 2. Keep your rod tip low to the water and not high in the air. This keeps driving the hook deeper into the fish rather than unhooking them. Good Luck!!!

Posts: 16632 Location: The desert | I had a streak for a while where I could keep anything hooked up.... it didnt even matter the species, muskies, salmon, or gigantic brown trout. Now, knock on wood, I've been doing pretty good and have been landing a few more fish. It will turn around for you, someday.

Posts: 3507 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | This weekend I the few fish that did hit somewhat "nipped" at the baits rather than really making a good go at them. I lost a nice one yesterday to a straightened hook (figured my fault since i couldn't get the drag loosened fast enough with the fish really going hard and the fish was at boatside...finally got it loosened and the fish took line. Got the net ready and up comes my bait...no fish at the end of it...Nice 4/0 hook bent out and away..) My fault on that one.. The other hits were light...almost as if the fish just kind of rolled up on the bait, and didn't make a real solid hit... So...the way my schedule sets up, I may finish the year blanked on my last outing... Tough year overall for me...not many fish at all.... Steve

Posts: 284 | Before I answer this I would like to preface by saying that I only get out fishing about 6 times a year since my daughter was born. Of those six times every year, at least 5 of them are musky trips that are early morning to late afternoon where we pound the water. I have you all beat. In the last 8 years I haven't boated a fish. I have seen a lot hooked a few but haven't got any in the boat. I have caught two musky in my life and that was enough to get me hooked. Granted my eight year drought only accumulates for approximately 40 outings but it still sucks. If anyone can guarantee me a decent fish (mid 40's) I got a benjamin for you. I thought this was going to be my year. It's getting really old.

This year started rough. I fished with 7 different folks on 9 different trips every one hooked up and every one lost the fish before it got into the net or it didn't fit in the net and eluded us. Last years was tough for me fishing at least once a week from Opener until Oct 18th without a fish. Oct 18 24" cuttie. the next week a 43". Season over.

"or it didn't fit in the net" What kind of net are you using?
