Those are really nice. I've got a couple very similar baits I'm working on right now. I couldn't believe it. I just weighted & sealed them yesterday. Yours are beautiful. If you want to see truly ugly I'll post mine later in the week if they've got paint. Been toying with the idea of "whiskers". Yours look great.
Kinda funny, bullheds ARE ugly, but I got on the Wisconsin DNR sites fish ID pictures & some of them actually have some of the most beautiful coloration of any fish. The madtoms (a relative) are unbelievable. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I guess.
I'll bet they'll get a good glide with the width of 'em, too. Can't wait to finish mine now!!!!

I had a friend make me 10 bullhead type bodies. They are only an inch thick, so it's more of a silouette. Anyway, while fishing this weekend, I caught some brown bullheads from The Mississippi River. They are far from ugly, and are delicious now when the water is cold.
I know there are three varieties, yellow, brown and black, and every bullhead pattern that I've ever seen has had a yellow belly. I've caught lots of bullheads from the river in spring, and all of them have white bellies....after you wash the mud off. I plan on making a few of each variety, but that yellow belly sure stands out better that the real deal, so I'm doing the yellow bullheads with a yellow belly, and will incorporate some yellow near the bellies of the brown and black ones too. They really have some colors on them that is hard to replicate, and with no scales to help with the pattern, I'm going to do some sponging with a finer sponge to try to copy the pattern of the skin markings.
The whiskers are a nice addition. I toyed with that idea, and have some sinker stops that are made out of tapered rubber with a sort of nail head on the end of them. They would fit in nicely, but I don't know if I'm going to go that far. Maybe I'll give it a try.
I've always had good luck on black/yellow/gold, and brown/yellow/gold lures. I never thought that they were ugly, and apparently neither did the fish.

There is beauty in simplicity. This bait has great eye appeal thanks to the smooth body lines and simple nature of the paint. I like it

Guest,
I know what you mean about the coloring of the main body. I did some painting trick's on this one but it's hard to see due to file size. I painted overall body a dark tan , then rag rolled a dark brown with Saran wrap. Painted an overall wash of olive, followed by a top of a brown mixture. Look's great in the sun but not exactly what I was going for. How's this? The whisker's are made from Weed Wacker line!!!

Only God can make them look like they are supposed to. We just try to make facsimilies that will trigger the feeding response in the pea sized muskie brain.
Weed Wacker line....now that is cool.
I was thinking about painting some mono.

I have some bullhead profile blanks that are only an inch thick, but I was going to paint them in an array of bullhead patterns and keep them all and donate some, because they have an awesome action.
I did some Perka blanks yesterday that are seconds for one reason of another, but I wanted to see what I could come up with.
I did everything from Moly Yellow to Kandy Yellow, white bellies, yellow bellies, then it came time for the sides and top. The black bullheads came out the best, because you can use platinum or light grey on the sides and black on the top, then I even did one where I put lime gold pearl over the black. That one is the most color correct.
For the brown and yellow bullhead, the DNR books show them to have an olive top and side, but when you read the description, it says that they range from bright to different shades of muted yellow. So I guess that there really is no wrong way to do a bullhead as long as it has a belly that is yellow or white. Sides that are yellow, olive or grey, and tops and heads that vary from olive to brown to black. Some have spots on their bodies. I know that bullheads that I catch in the rivers that I fish all have a mottled brownish color over a lighter or golden brown. Some have bright yellow, usually under the head, while some have yellow that goes all the way along the sides.
I don't think that I will bother with whiskers. I don't think that muskies even know that they have whiskers, but they sure know to turn them to go down head first!
I'll have to show you what they look like when I get around to doing them. I have 8 blanks, and every one of them will be different.
I do like the bullhead pictured. Maybe I'll take all of my old Bobbie Bait and take off the tails and fill in the mouth and redo them. Maybe weighting one to glide would be an easier undertaking.
Like 'Guest' said, I've caught plenty of fish on black-yellow-gold, whether it's gliders or bucktails. Brown-yellow-gold also produced, but I always thought that it was smallmouth bass, when the fish were thinking bullheads.
I guess that I should weight them a little heavier since they spend almost all of their time on or near the bottom.
I think that we'll be seeing several bullheads before the year is over.

Hopefully, here's a couple bullheads I rattle can painted yesterday (not clear coated, yet). I'm glad Beaver said theres no way to paint one wrong, but he might change his mind after seeing these. Top ones a sinker, bottoms a floater.
