I like to throw a spoon in the mix every once in a while.Problem is when you approach 4mph they blow out. What brands are you guys using?

The brands won't matter. When you get above 3mph the spoon will just spin.around and twist your line...no matter how many or how good your swivel/s are. I usually only troll spoons right after ice out.

Tony Acetta pet spoons. You can troll them 6-8 mph.

do those pet spoons have a wide wobble like the big daredevils have ? I haven't been able to go over 2.5 or three mph with the daredevils !

Multiple high quality ball bearing swivels are in order when using spoons. Especially trolling. However at the end of the day your line may need to be replaced, at least a casts length.

The striper guys use the pet spoons for big stripers. And I mean big stripers. I have not fooled around with them enough, but have taken some very big pike on them. I do plan to use them more this year. If a big pike will hit them, so will a muskie.

I use Atom spoons by Abu Garcia at times, an old classic lure over here in Europe. If anyone's interested in trying them, send me a message and I can help you get ahold of some.

Try a Larson spoon, I think a guy called Fishing Pool was selling them at one of the shows, its large spoon with a diving lip and it trolls good, did anybody else see them?

Draging up an old post here but..

I troll a spoon once in a while. No ned to strip off or lose any line when you are done. I use a 48 inch mono leader and snap on a weight (4-10 oz or so) at the rod end of the leader. The weight will not spin! The mono leader is too thick to twist. I had my 7 yr old land a Ski a week ago that ate my custom home painted perch Tony Accetta "Pet" spoon. Was a funny day, no rips at all on the conventional Lake St Clair trolling baits. I put out a rattle trap and got a fish. Put out the tony and got a fish. Hmm..show 'em somthing different??

p.s. Not a bad "hold" for a 7 yr old eh? (he got a little rash on his finger from inside the gill plate and was proudly showing it off to all his friends at church the next day. A red badge of courage I guess.)

Tim, The Pet Spoons can be hard to find in retail stores. Check out the saltwater websites. The Pearl white (for me) is by far the best. They are built for mega duty. Get out the file when you open the package and work the hook over hard. They have incredible hooking percentages and release very easy because of the single hook. The hook is screwed to the blade of the spoon so you can just grab the spoon and pop it out. The action is beautiful! You want the size 17 Tony Accetta "Pet" spoon.

By the way these are awesome for casting too. With the single up-turned hook they will go through the thickest stuff you can imagine. If they do pick up some green stuff, give the rod a power snap or two and it rips clean so you can fish out the cast. They flutter on the fall horizontally which is rare for spoons. In Quebec we were casting them, on purpose, into the flooded brush. It looked silly with the lure hanging a couple of feet above the water in the bushes. With a little wiggle and a tug it would plop in the water right next to the edge of the bushes. On the fall it would get nailed quite often. Almost never hung up even in the brush. Many giant pike fell to Tony that week.

Below is a white 17 and my home painted Perch, which I'm happy to say is missing some paint after last weekend.
