Posts: 200 | So how much IPT do you loss on an average cast? For example a 200 sized reel pulling 30 IPT with a capacity of 100 yards and a 300 sized reel pulling 34.5 IPT with a capacity of 230. How would the IPT change on these reels after a cast?

Posts: 532 | 1 Whats an average cast length? 2 How wide is the spool? 3 Like Zinox asked, Line dia? 4 Starting spool Dia? Ending end of cast spool Dia? 5 Was your line tight on the spool or loose before the cast? IPT reduces as the spool dia gets smaller, if you can figure out your spool dia you can find your IPT. It is the only variable in the instantaneous measurement of IPT, because it is consistantly changing. Try this, cast your average cast, mark your line, line it up with the something say the rod tip, then turn the handle 1 complete turn and measure the distance moved.

Posts: 422 Location: MN | I looked into this detail when choosing 300 vs 400 Tranx hg. Obviously the larger spool has less of a reduction in IPT, but exactly how much? After some analysis (can go into detail if needed), with 80 lb braid, I got the attached curves for IPT vs line out. In this case, at the end of a longish cast (100 ft), the 300 had 34 IPT and the 400 had 35 IPT. Those values are about 85% of the full spool value. Posts: 422 Location: MN | Also, at noted above, you can measure IPT either directly (mark line) or by using either spool diameter (caliper) or circumference (string or soft tape measure) at the end of a cast. For the latter, note 1 turn of the crank gives (gear ratio) turns of the spool, and each spool turn picks up one circumference worth of line, so IPT would be: IPT = (gear ratio) * (spool circumference) = (gear ratio) * pi * (spool diameter)

Posts: 200 | Wow! There’s a few variables I guess. So if I am understanding correctly, I will loss more IPT on a smaller diameter spool that holds less line? So my 200 size bass reel that holds 120 yards will loss more speed than my 300 size 300 yard capacity reel?

Posts: 1100 | It depend on the line diameter on the different reels, and the spool design. But in general yes you would loose more IPT with the smaller spool, and you will loose more IPT with a thick line vs a thin line.

If it was 28 vs 35 IPT at the end of the cast I might have gone 400.
