I have an occasional GPS problem with my LMS520C. What happens is the position update occasionally just stops during a drift. It will be working fine tracking position and then all of a sudden just stop and stay in the exact same place for a few minutes. Then a little later is will come back and make a couple large jumps to the correct position. During this, it never says position lost or GPS module not responding. Anyone ever have this issue or have some suggestions on how to fix it?

Thanks,

John

Typically (not always), when the antenna completely fails you will get a GPS Module Not Responding warning. You also get this warning if you lose power to your NMEA network. Lack of this warning and intermittent GPS reception is probably a result of a weak, failing antenna.

Could obstructions be causing my issue? Or would I be getting position lost and ? on cursor error? I have a relatively new Point 1 antenna on the unit. Thanks for any help.

Also how far does the antenna have to be from unit? I have heard it needs to be a good distance away. Is this true?

My 520C was about 18-24" from the unit. Worked fine. Occasionally lost or hesitated, not too bad.

I had a 520C and an LCX 112 do the same thing off and on for about a month, and then they both stopped working completely two days apart. In both cases the GPS receiver went bad, and both units needed to be replaced. The 520C is very old technology, and is no longer supported. I was lucky as I was still under the extended warranty so I got both replaced. I hope it works out for you.

what they don't tell you in the manual is you need to wire a switch into the power cable to turn the antenna off when the boat is being stored. the switch will shut the antenna down other wise it is always on and searching for a signal. that is how most of them get burned out. I have one and everything is still working like brand new. just my two cents.

Have you checked the status page when this is happening? That might tell you whether you're still picking up satellites. Puck is supposed to be 3' from the unit and unobstructed.

I agree with others, puck is likely going out. My last one worked intermittently right before it went out.

Yes, I have checked the status page and I do have satellites. I did have a puck go bad on an old unit and it lost position and said GPS module not responding while the cursor had a ? mark over it. The puck I am using on this one is the latest and greatest- Point 1- and these are supposed to be much, much better than the lgc2000 and lgc3000. I checked and I was running old software. So I did a hard reset and updated to the latest software and will see if that fixes it. Thanks for all the ideas and keep them coming.

Know anyone with a similar unit that would let you borrow their puck? I'd try that first before messing with other stuff. Just because it's not saying position lost or gps module not responding doesn't rule out the issue.

UPDATE. I was able to resolve the issue I was having. The exact problem was the Lowrance Point 1 antenna- with older versions of software- would not update position constantly when moving 0.7 mph or less. I was able to find this info on another fishing site. To fix I loaded the latest Point 1 antenna code into the antenna. I had to hook the antenna up to an HDS unit to do this, as downloading code to a network device is not possible through the LMS520C. All appears to be working fine now.
