I'm planning on taking my wife on her first Canadian fishing trip this summer. We are going the second week of July. I'm looking for recommendations on a nice place to take her-American Plan-she doesn't want to have to cook. I've been to Witch Bay, and would go back, but I think the central bathrooms may be a problem.

I've looked at Wiley Point Lodge, and it looks nice (pretty expensive, but the other Totem Resorts seemed much more so). Anyone been there recently that could comment. I have also looked at Sunsuri Island-again, any comments?

We are going to fish for muskies and walleyes.

Thanks,
Bill

I have been to Wiley with the wife. It was about 3 years ago and it was certainly a nice place. They bend over backwards to treat you like a king there.

We were greeted at Totem when we arrived with a free cocktail. While we were registering and purchasing our licenses a porter emptied our car, parked it, and loaded our stuff in a shuttle boat. We were shuttled the one hour trip over to Wiley. They were waiting on the dock for us at Wiley and took our stuff to our room while we were given the grand tour. Every morning we had a cook to order breakfast, anything you wanted was possible. At breakfast they asked how we would like lunch, a. box to take with, b. shore lunch on the beach at the resort, c. cook to order in the lodge. Dinner was different every night including one night of cook your own T-bones. The food was outstanding and there was way too much. Each morning we found our boat full of gass and bait and if we elected a box lunch that was in the boat too. When we returned from fishing there was always someone waiting on the dock to tie us up, carry our stuff to our room (if we let them) and offering to clean any fish we may have brought back. When we returned to Totem to check out our car was waiting for us, loaded with our stuff and to top it off, it had been washed!

Yes it was quite expensive but I definately would do it again if the wife was interested in going.

Email me if you have any more questions. ps. I got a letter from the family recently advising they had a tough year 2002 with many many cancellations due to 9-11 and the bad economy. They were offering discounts to book for 2003.

I would strongly recomend Red Wing Lodge 807-488-5601. Its located in a enclosed bay so even if its real windy you can get out and your boat does not get pownded from waves at night at the docks. Also very good fishing right around camp.Mike bartlett runs a real good set up there all his staff is real nice.Lots of enclosed spots close to camp so no matter the weather you can still fish.Last year I got 12 muskys in a week the second week of July from 36"-47" saw several 50" fish including one over 40#
Good luck

Hi Luke,

Interesting experience, but I assume you would know that open liquor in the boat is illegal in Canada. Certainly the lodge should know that. I hope you are referring to Kiddie Cocktails.

Frank:

You are correct, adult beverages were only consumed on dry land.

Thanks for the tip on Duck Bay Lodge. I had not run across that one in my search, yet. One question though, what's the boat traffic like in the area? I know that Sabaskong Bay is more crowded than where I was in Witch Bay, but does it affect your fishing? I don't want to "get in line" to fish a weed bed. Any comments?

Thanks, Bill

I have to 2nd the recommendation for Duck Bay Lodge. I've been there twice and won't go anywhere else on LOTW as long as Dave & Sherrie own the place. Everything is first class, food is excellent, and boat traffic isn't a problem.

Doesn't it really come down to your wife's tolerance level? Are you there as a hard core musky couple or is this your second honeymoon? Many of the previous are very good resorts. But the way my wife and I hit the water all we care about is that we have a bug free roof over our head after a 17 hour day. So $$$$$ matter.

RE: Boat Traffic at Duck Bay

It hasn't been an issue for us. We were there last August and I have a friend that spent two weeks there is July and it is not a problem. If you hire a guide they know the out of the way spots. I would recommend Robb or Thatcher. Dave and Sherrie also have connections with other guides from the area that will put you on fish.

If you go you'll have a great time.

I would recommend Sandy's Blackhawk Island Lodge. It is brand new and first class. Bill & Cindy Sandy will take care of you. Their link is below for your convenience. Tell'em the Big Goomb sent you
