It just isn’t right , I’ve been custom making Muskie size lures for about 3 years and have purchased many Muskie size lures over the last three year, I caught my first Muskie 3 years ago and a nice one at that 49 inches, I have $1000 invested in my tackle just like everyone else out there , ok here is the story last week I was back in Ear Falls Canada on my yearly trip, I know right where some musky's should be (hot spot) , me and my buddy where fishing this area on are second day there, and two other camp boats pulled up on the opposite side of the big rock and started to fish the very first cast for the boat operator he hooked up and boy was he hooked to a nice monster I land the fish for them about 8 minutes later and it was 54 inches super big fish and he released it also, ok hear is the kick in the pants all on bass tackle and he was using an 3” chartreuse spoon, then 3 day later my buddy Erv catches a 49 Muskie on guess what a small chartreuse wiggle wart, go figure and again all on bass tackle right front of my very eyes while I’m throwing all these high dollar Muskie lures.

One of my dads biggest (48") was on a Beetle Spin with a 7' ML St. Croix and 8lb mono. My first (36") was also on a Beetle Spin, same setup. Heck I've caught lots of Muskies on a 1/2 oz white tandem spinner bait.

Works the other way too, my dads biggest bluegill was caught on a double buzz bait, and my biggest bass was caught muskie fishing with a lure that looks like a 14" pike.

I took a buddy out fishing for muskies for the first time and were casting in towards shore and he puts the musky rod down and picks up a bass pole with a little mepps spinner with 8lb mono and no leader and starts casting out in no man's land and hooks up with a 36" musky and he's like that's not as tough as you make musky fishing out to be. While I'm throwing dcgs and other high end baits with high end rods and reels. It's not fair.

Last trip to Canada in Sept the biggest fish boated was a high 40's on a bass popper, and no muskies were boated with typical large musky baits. Figured the 20+ deg temp drop after the first day had something to do with that.

Last year I was out fishing with my wife. It was a calm fall day and I had already boated a short fat 38" on a topraider. The lake was like glass and there was hardly any wind. We started trolling, I was using a all black mag dawg and she had on a 75mm Spro lip less rattle style bait, red, black, gold. We were maybe 10 minutes into our trolling session and her little 6ft medium action pole with 10lb test bent in half like she hooked into a house... She had hooked into a 45" musky. She faught the thing for a little while, but she had her drag set perfectly. That musky went air born about 5 times and I have never seen one before or since then that has jumped higher or more times.... So I throw Musky baits and she throws rattle raps and she gets the bigger fish.... I was really proud of her! her PB was also her first.

My largest WI Fish a 52'er was caught on a 6" Swim Whizz. Had A 40"er break off at the boat here on Cave Run Lake fishing Bluegills on 4# line on a #00 popeye jig. got a 30"er on a fly, fishing for Crappie (that was fun). Caught many 30"to 40" Musky on the Spider Lake Chain in Sawyer Co. Wisc, on 3" rattle spoons. I had a summer home on North lake part of the Spider Lake Chain back in the 70's. We caught lots of Walleye's there, and had a Bob Cat that lived in a tree by us, Scared the hell out of company at night, allso Bear tracks on our front door when we open up in the sping. Wish I had that place back. Take care. Marv.

Biggest muskie i have seen followed a 3" tube spinner. My biggest vermillion musky at a small inline buzzer i made for bass and pike. Lost a musky yesterday on a #5 shadrap fishing for walleye and bass. Nothing to get worked up about, it happens.

Just because a fish is huge, doesnt mean it will always eat a huge meal. But on the flip side to that, I would have confidence throwing 3-4" lures for muskie... ever. It is luck of the draw for the guys fishing other species who catch muskie; big or small.

I do find that the big bait craze it over rated though. Unless you are searching for monsters and monsters only.

couple things to ponder there...was he just on the right side of the rock at the right time? was he reeling in at a different speed? was he using a hot color/different one? Were you throwing BIG stuff but maybe the fish would have sucked in medium sized, not just small?

9 times out of 10 it's never as cut n dry and there's several factors involved

Two years ago on LOTW the second biggest fish of the week for the group came on a Dorazio Signature Series Baby Boo-Tail. 49 1/2". I'd been throwin Gerry Girl's a lot until that spot. About the 10th cast, and that beauty took it on the "L"! One of the other guys in the groupd went "retro" from day one, and caught a bunch of fish that week on Baby Boo's.

I took a friend out a long time ago that had never caught a musky. He wanted to bad and bought a ton of baits and a nice rod and reel. I had been taking him out a fair amount but he never really even had a chance. I hadn't caught very many muskies at this time either and was just as eager. Anyway, he puts on a jackpot on opening day and cast it out and starts straight reeling it in! No twitches...nothin! So I explained to him what a walk the dog bait was and he picked it up fairly well. Fish were moving around pretty good that morning and I had missed one strike. He took a cast and backlashed so bad that it would not come out. I dropped him off at the landing and and he took the truck to get new line while I fished. After he returned, we went back to where we left off and he zings the jackpot out and pops a 50 incher!!! I was BUMMED!!! Where is the justice?

Not really what the thread was about but the way he was working the bait made me think it is relevant.
