Message Subject: Phantom -> Phantom softtail

Posts: 41 | Recently did some cutting, epoxy, glueing, hook hanger movement to make some regular phantoms into phantom softtails. The ones with phantom replacement tails looked like a musky was following even though there are no muskies in the local lake I tried them in. I cut a 6" Mogumbo for another and it didn't run left to right well. The thickness on the tail is about 2x as thich as the phantom tail. Also a little larger. Might be putting the brakes on the glide. Any thoughts?

Posts: 742 Location: Grand Rapids MN | You're right. If the tail is to thick or large for the size of the bait it kills the glide. Action Plastic grubs (which were the original tails used on Phantoms) and the 5" (I believe) Mogambo if thinner also or get the replacement tails from Phantom.

Posts: 1141 Location: NorthCentral WI | Take a scissors and trim the Kalin's tail down to about half the thickness. Has always worked for me. I always get the Kalin's and trim them just because they are readily available at local shops where others are not.

Posts: 41 | got some phantom replacements when R&H had no shipping cost recently but I didn't get enough colors. Martin you have me curious as I have the mogumbo's already in the right colors. Not sure how to describe this but I guess x,y,z axises might do it. The length 6" would be the x axis. Y would be the height. For these two axis picture what you would see in a catalog. the z axis would be lookig at the lure from directly behind or the front. This is what I meant by thickness of the tail. is your half the thickness on the z axis or on the two dimensional x,y axises? If what you are doing is working I'm thankful as it will save me time and money. If it is the z axis any more explanation as how to slice it would save me some of the experience curve and a few mess up tails. Thank you in advance.

Just gotta make sure you trim enough off.

Posts: 424 | Muskyjerk, Get a original phantom tail grub, placed it on a mogambo grub and shape of the mogambo's tail following the design of the original phantom's tail. Hope this helps you. esoxone
