Posts: 4266 | ....with Mike Kings new "Fat Shad'. When I saw them I hoped that they would be that lure that I used to use on Pewaukee. The old DB-3's were that lure. You could cast them and troll them too, but alas, balsa wood just isn't made to hold up to multiple fish, not even bass. Paint chips flying, cracks everywhere, wood taking on water just compounded the problem. They caught fish by golly, but they don't cost $2.99 on sale anymore so I don't think that they are worth it. Enter 'The Fat Shad'. Made of Cedar, double sealed, great paint jobs, tough top coat and thru-wire construction. Not round, it's flat-sided with a coffin corner bill. It doesn't wobble with the roll that a DB3 had, but it feels almost like a big Rattle Trap coming in. Tremendous vibration and easy to use. It doesn't rise up nearly as quickly as a DB3, and if you keep the line taught, you can rip it and twitch it while it's down there or let it work it's way out of the weeds. I had a limited opportunity to throw it at a Lake Michigan boat launch, and the dive angle made me think that I could bump bottom in at least 15' of water. I imagine that while trolling, you should be able to reach 25' or more, but you'll have to ask Mike about that. All I know is that Mike has built a better mousetrap again. 5" long, 3/4" thick through wire casting-trolling lure that I bet will put some Waukesha County lunkers in the boat. nice looking baits, i've like Mike's other stuff and that looks like a winner too. i picked up a Muskie Train "Diesel" for exactly the same purpose - trolling southern Wisconsin lakes. they're a dead ringer for those old DBs. if Dorn's has them i'll probably try and get at least one more this weekend at the Madison Expo. http://muskietrain.com/ i included a Bagley for comparison.
