| Does anyone have experience with their Lowrance X17 GPS not working and giving a message across the screen that says "GPS Module Not Responding"? Thanks for any help in advance. Jim | |||

Posts: 38 Location: Port Washington, WI | My LMS332 was giving me the same message last year. After fighting with it for a few days I unplugged the gps module, plugged it back in and it seemed to take care of the problem. I guess the connection was loose or something. I have had it happen once or twice since and this method has taken care of the problem each time. Hope this helps. At least it is something simple to try.

| Jim, I had the same problem. Iwould get the message "GPS Module not Resonding", then I would get "Position Aquired" and it would happen from time to time. Then it got worse and worse to the point where the GPS doesn't work anymore. I even went out and tried a new GPS Puck, but it still didn't work. Now I have my X17 running as just a Depthfinder and I added a new GPS unit. I never liked the split screen anyway. I would bet on the problem getting worse over time and you will need to take the unit in for repair if you want to keep using the GPS feature. Good Luck, Steve Sedesky | |||

Posts: 95 Location: LOTW every chance I get | I had the same issue after I installed mine. Embarrassed to say that I inadvertently put a screw thru the cable from the puck to the head unit when I replaced a cover. Amazingly, it started working as soon as I pulled out the screw and hasn't been a problem since. Bottom line, check your cable. Dave

| I had a different unit, same problem - you would assume that the puck is powered through the main cord, but it's probably powered separately - if yours is like mine, you have 3 cords - one of them powers the unit, the separate one powers the puck, the other is for the network. The Lowrance manual is idiotic (at best) in that it doesn't just say "GPS power cord." Mine was labeled "NMEA 2000" or something stupid like that. Such a great product, such a stupid manual. | |||

Posts: 462 Location: Madison Wi. Chain | I have this unit. It takes a bit of time for the GPS to get a signal. Also, depending on where you are at it may just not be getting the signal especially if you have not moved your boat or are in an area that might have some obstacles for the signal or are very rural. Finally, I have had to reconnect the power on occassion and again this has always solved the problem.

Posts: 90 | this unit, just like the old x15's have two reds and two blacks. However for the newer units, the module has its own power source and need both of these to be hooked up to a power source. If either one of them is loose your unit powers on and the gps says "module not responding." On the flip side of things, once it is hooked up and the unit is running, be sure to have a switch to turn the power off when not in use. The modules do continue to suck power and "find themselves" even after the unit is disconnected and it can drain your battery

Posts: 90 | oh, just remembered that the new mocules just like the unit itself have software updates and the first time they did this, i think the module had to be updated before the head unit, but the head unit had to be updated as well so that they could "speak" to each other. (not sure on order maybe it was vice versa) but if your module was updated and the unit wasnt then basically the module was receiving a signal, but the unit couldnt understand it.

| Thanks for the responses so far. So, what you're saying is that even if power to the unit is fine, no issues with the sonar power or function...it can still be power for the GPS? It takes me a while. | |||

Posts: 90 | Just because the unit turns on does not mean that the gps puck has power. If you look at your power cord you will see two seperate reds and blacks. If you take one red and one black and hook it to a power source the unit will turn on and "gps not responding" will pop up. If you then take the other red/black (which is theoritically the gps power source) and hook just that up, the unit turns on and says the same thing. Only when both of those are connected will the gps work and if one comes loose the gps is the one that looses power.
