I use a needle to separate out how much I need, then pinch above that and cut off what I need. You can also take a small zip tie and tighten it down tightly beneath the wire crimp to really hold it all together.

And while we're talking about flashabou, if you've got a Michael's craft store near you, you can buy "Basket Accents" there by the bag. Sounds kinda dumb, but it's the exact same thing as the broader saltwater flashabou, and a bag is like $2.50, and that equates to at least four or five packages like what you'd buy at the flyshop for $4.00+. They've got silver, gold, red, blue (I think) and the white/clear/irridescent. I stocked up just the other day.

Thanks for the tips... I was wondering if there were other options to find some of these materials. I'll have to check out some of the local craft stores or a Michael's the next time I'm out of time.

Yeah Michael's rocks. I get my plastic beads there too. They've got really nice silver, gold and pearl beads for fake jewlry, as well as a faceted beads in a few colors. You can buy something like 800 4mm plastic beads for $3, whereas 120 Pucci beads from Cabela's is $2.

I don' know how many of you use plastic beads on your lures, but I can't afford the weight of five or six 5 mm metal beads on my flies, so I use the plastic.

Sounds like Michael's is worth looking into. They list Metallic Shred and Paper Shred. Most of the flashabou I see is mylar.
So, I think the Metallic Shred is what one should look for. At least, that is what I'll be considering.

"Basket Accents® Metallic Shred is manufactured using luxurious shredded Mylar, and available in a myriad of colors."

I got a strange look from the ol' wife when I asked if there was a Michael's in Duluth...... Then I told her it was fishing related to which her reply was "figured that much!"

Yep, you want the metallic stuff. Like I said, it's a wider strip that standard flashabout, but rather thicker like saltwater flashabou, which I actually prefer anyway. I'm a sucker for the holographic stuff, which Michael's doesn't have, so I add some flyshop-bought flashabou to the Michael's stuff, and it works well.

And the beads are "Jewelry Essentials Crafting Beads." (I do feel like a weirdo walking up to the counter with a cart full of this stuff, but Michael's also has a great picture frame section, so if you need a frame for your P.B. pic from last year or whatever, they'll have one for ya. It's not all fake flowers and lace in there.)

Awesome about Michaels. I just happen to have one fairly close to where I live. I have been wanting to start tying some double 10's, but the cost of the flash has kept me from starting. Looks like I'll have to give it a shot now!

I have tried to cut costs by using different flash but i still think hedron is worth the money for bigger baits. I found the Basket accents to be to messy, to many different lengths from 4-15 inches in the same bag, cut to wide, and again to messy. I hate sorting bags of flash. I like it zip-tied or stapled in perfect order all to the exact same length when it comes to my doorstep. I have used other stuff for accent but I recommend the good stuff many tackle companies like Stamina have to offer. Just my opinion.

Barlowtackle.com has an awesome selection. In the 1/32 strand. Also here in Michigan Sportsman warehouse has a great selection. Micheals does have some wider stuff. but I like the cowgirl look.

Also You can take razor blades with the hole in the middle. Place ten side by side. Place a small bolt/washer, and lock nut through the razor blades. I think I used a #6 bolt to fit through.

Get some milar. Balloons from a dollar store will work. (without helium)

Tape it down to hold tight onto a piece of cardboard, then push down with some good force and pull through. the gapping of the razor blades will produce the flashaboo. I believe its a bit bigger then the standard 1/32, but not much.

Anyway something to play with.

Heres a few I made this winter. If you where wondering. The purple blade is powdercoated with jig powder paint. Makes an awesome look.

Regarding the differences between the bona fide Flashabou, and the "basket accents," I use both. It all depends on what I need in a fly. If I need a "deep" fly fished in dark, murky water that needs to put out a larger audible signature, I use the stuff from Michael's. It's much stiffer, and if you crinkle it, it bulks up and takes a form. There's not much movement to it, but at 100' down for halibut, or even 20' down in murky water for summer pike, they're not hunting by sight. They need to "hear" a sizeable bit of prey moving through the water. In this situation, a larger form moving a lot of water fits the bill.

Actual Flashabou, even the saltwater variety, is much more pliable and has movement and action. I fish this in clearer, more shallow water when flash and flare is the name of the game, and I'm attracting fish who'll key in on visual ques.

And of course, Flashabou comes in more colors, and holographic varieties.

Here's one of each. The top pic is the Michael's Basket Accents, and the bottom is Flashabou in the same color.
