| Just wondering what you guys do to start the season as far as bait size goes? Normally, when I start off, I throw small lures such as Husky Jerks and little twitch baits. Also, the Rizzo Wizz has been a great early season bait. What do you guys start throwing real early in the season and when do you start upping the sizes of your baits?

| I like Cranes, 5" Slammers, and small bucktails that I make. I also toss alot of jigs at this time using 5" twister type tails and waterdogs. I like to start small and slow and shallow.

I always thought the same way until last year when a guy I know hooked up some nice fish the first couple of weekends on baits to me were mid summer baits like a 9" jerk bait.So I'm on the fence. |

| Two years ago a 50"+ muskie was caught on Pewaukee Lake in May. The taxidermist found a 31" muskie inside!
I throw all sizes from opening day until the season closes. If the right piece of hardware ends up in front of the right
muskie and it eats it, I'll catch it! |

| Last year, opening weekend, was throwing my new Topraider to see how it worked. I raised a couple of nice ones, how long is that 6 or 7 inches? Never went smaller after that. |

| Gotta go with the Rizzo Whiz myself, pulled in the first fish of the year last opener. I will also use the smaller Mepps Musky Killers and Baby Shallow Raider to twitch with. |

| Totally depends on the spring for me, but I always err towards the bigger stuff till they absolutely tell me they want otherwise. I like 6" jerks like Reef Hawgs, and some smaller spinners like Jack attacks for my smaller lures. |

| I like the small stuff earl in the season. Single Mepp's and 5 inch Slammers are the starting line up for opening day. The only large bait that I will throw early is a jerk bait.
By the end of June or early July I use the big stuff. |

| I did good 2years in a row with 10"jakes in the middle of to early june,so any size bait works,but try everything and let the fish tell you what works. |

| I start out on Wisconsin lakes with 5" Slammers and work from there.
Steve van, that fish was caught OCT 30th 4 years ago, not in the spring. Ok buddy.[;)] |

| Thanks for the correction Jason you may be right, but the point is the muskie isn't going to look for nibble food if it can get a real meal. |

| Have always started with smaller bucks and twithcers. This year have decided to go with the average sized baits that I use all year. Nothing huge. More like the 6" Slammers, Grandma's, Cranes and standard bucktails.
Besided, the first couple weeks you end up using all the new baits you picked up over winter "just to see how they work". Let the fish decide from there.

| Hi All,
I do downsize some in the spring
but I think speed, is much more important, than size.
I like to throw baits that look good at slower speeds. Bucktails, 6"jakes, jig & lizard and single blade spinnerbaits, all do very well in cold water.
Shallow running minnow baits with a nice wide wobble, have been a stone killer for me in spring. [:)] |
