Ice is 4-6" and real solid in smaller waters here in the South Central UP. Went twice jigging for perch and walleye plus put out a tip-up for walleye. Caught a few 7-10" perch each trip, plus a few accidental bass, but no walleye. #3 glow Sweedish Pimple w/ minnow head was the hot bait. Bait shop guy said bluegills are active on small lakes in the area. Nice to be out fishing again!

Ranger, just curious what part of the u.p. you are in. My brother and his in-laws have a place on camp lake in iron county. Nice area with some musky water near him.[:)]

Fished the Vilas Co. area on Sunday and caught around 20 pike, 3 walleyes and 2 muskies. Caught and released a 29" eye at 1:30 p.m. in 5 feet of water. Pleasant surprise! Ice conditions are fair at best. With the cold night temps, I would expect no problem fishing anywhere this weekend. I digress, some of the huge lakes, Trout, Pelican, Fence ect. may be soft water still. Have heard good reports on the Manitowish chain for eyes.

Hi Todd,

I'm in Dickinson County, just east of Iron. I think you are right about the Iron County lakes, I haven't fished many myself (yet[:)]). Plus, the Paint River is a gem.

Lake Du Bay and the Big Eau Pleine have been hot this past week for eyes, there are lots of shanties out there already. On Sunday my buddy and his partner took six legal eyes.

I drove through Ishpiming, MI yesterday (on the shore of Lake Superior, and proud home of The Yoopers Musical Group and Plumbers) and passed a lake with, I'm not kidding, a couple hundred guys ice fishing. This was at about 9:30 on a weekday morning. A guy at my meeting down the road said "Yup, they've been just killing the walleye and perch for the last week. Guys are callin' in sick to work all over the county." Another fellow I ran into said he's put 20 nice eyes in the freezer in the last 2 weeks, all caught on one small lake outside of Iron, River, MI. Me, I have not had that sort of luck. But they sure seem active here in the UP.

Fished LOTW this past weekend. We stayed at Frank & Laura Walsh's Bay Store in the angle. Despite somewhat slow fishing, we had a wonderful time. The Woods is beautiful in Winter. Frank and Laura are great hosts. If you have never been up there in Winter, you gotta go!

We caught a lot of small Walleyes, too many to count. For 2.5 days of fishing (roughly 20 hours), we came back with 5 Walleyes and 11 Perch. Perch ran 10" - 12", Walleyes 13" - 15". Some other fish houses were doing better than us so it was more a matter of which house was going to be hot on a given day.

Everybody out there was catching fish but reporting the action as slow. Most productive presentation for us was minnows below slip bobbers. Second was rapalas w/ minnow heads. Fished mud flats adjacent to reefs; 20'-28' of water depending on which house.

We also had the rare pleasure of seeing a Wolf. I haven't seen one in over 10 years so I was digging it. Saw it along the road, just outside of Sprague, about 30 yds away so we got a real good look. It took off before we could get the camera, damn.

peweaukee lake giving up lots of shorties(10 to 14 inch). takes lots of these bait hawgs to catch some legals. took my 9 year old son 16 shorties before he cought his first legal(23inch). east end ice is still good, fished it saturday with clients cought 2 muskies and 1 northern. some nice muskies were cought by my brothers and friends. 1 upper 40's and 4 between 36 and 42. the west end has been good also there was a 25inch walleye cought friday night off walks island. be carefull of the numerous heaves in the big lake. walleyes are in the picky mode now look for weather paterns to help you pick the best times to go. see you on the water.

Pewaukee walleyes still active, most fish are 13 to 14 inchers with the legals ranging from 20 to 23inch. the shorty to legal ratio is still 10 to 1 and getting worse. friday and saturday nights tally was 17 shortys to 0 keepers. But there was a bonus 35 inch pike that i cought and released. Will try another spot tuesday night. bests times have been 5 to 11pm. be safe ice conditions have gotten worse over the last week.
