Posts: 11 | Got a call from the camp owner of our annual trip to sunset country. Said that the lines at the border are expected to be long as the agents are checking for goods brought in that are eligible for tariffs. He suggested keeping all grocery etc receipts to make it easier or you’ll have to go through your goods. Also suggested just shopping in (my case) fort francis to avoid any hassles. Not sure how much will transpire but figured I’d post and you all can look for news prior to you trips

My sister lived in International Falls for a few years and has friends there telling her similar stories about the border crossing. And a dramatic reduction in folks coming across from Canada. The new Prime Minister, leader of the Liberal Party, made opposition to Trump and tariffs the theme of his campaign. Remarkable change in politics, given that the Liberals trailed Conservatives by 20% in the polls 3 months ago, pre-tariffs. While it makes sense that things will be tightened at the border for a period of time as tariff war goes on, tariffs and practices can change and by the time most musky guys are looking to go north, things could loosen up. A wild card is the dollar. It has dropped against many currencies and if that continues, it may impact prices. But again, things change quickly, just stay aware.

I keep it to myself because this is a MUSKY forum, and I choose not to bring discussion of divisive issues into the sport I love. If I feel spurred to political action, I will do so elsewhere through orgs dedicated to such things. A musky forum ain't it.

Posts: 391 Location: Selkirk, Manitoba | Tourists are welcome in Canada from anywhere. When travelling to any country, it is usually appreciated by folks in that country that you contribute to the economy there as much as you can. Bringing your own groceries a bit of a no-no unless you are not really going able to go to a store that has adequate goods. In any event bringing groceries across a border, even when you are not bringing something prohibited, is gambling with the potential for delays. When crossing the border, you are not importing goods (unless you intend to gift or sell up here), so tariffs are irrelevant. If you buy something in Canada and going back, then you are dealing with the usual issues with regards to what you are allowed and items subject to tariffs with US Customs. The tariffs on their own have very little to do with current Canada-US relations with regards to how Canadians currently perceive the US as a destination and neighbour. The only thing I could find on this was you may get checked to see if what you are bringing for a trip is over any import limits, or vastly more than you need (example...groceries that would last for a month but you will only be there a week) I could see a slow-down happening....guess time will tell on how bad it could be... A couple more weeks and we will know. Steve

I wonder if things won't speed up as the authorities become more familiar with new guidelines. Us old folks remember what security was like after 9/11. I went to Las Vegas for a wedding right after TSA was established and the line circled the airport terminal. There had been a rodeo in town and there was a group of cowboys ahead of us (they carried their "good hats" in round boxes). One older cowboy got stopped because he had so much metal in his legs and hips. Off with the boots, buckle, etc. Still set the detector off. The TSA folks didn't know what to do with him. Made his sit in a chair. Held everything up for ten minutes. He looked like he was ready to take on the whole group of them in his stocking feet. Today, he would have a doctor's letter explaining where every metal part was in his body.

Posts: 1484 Location: Brighton CO. | Before I go back to Canada I got to get off my butt and get a passport, from 2000-04 we fished in Minaki every year and the prices were in Canadian and the dollar was strong it was cheaper to fish in Canada then Wisconsin (and the fishing was better) except there was no place to buy groceries and the big hotel and golf course were closed. Then the Canaian went up and they opened up local stores and resort and golf course. Then resort and golf course was open for one season and the guy didn't pay the help some ex employee's burnt the place to the ground.

This is a conversation that needs to be had, long term consequences towards the accessibility and affordability of our respective passion now exist. Damaging consequences. Should we expect pleasantries and decorum from our Canadian anglers whose sovereignty has been threatened? How many American anglers will lose the ability to pursue a northern expedition this year? Choices have been made that, whether you or others want to publicly acknowledge them or not, directly affect muskie angling in a damaging way. In no way do I view silence in regards to a difficult reality a permissible stance - involvement in advocating for what we care about is necessary.

Doesn't seem fair for one side to get to tariff the daylights out of the US while the US does not get to do that in return. Seems pretty fair to expect free trade. Along with that, and I cannot speak for everyone, but if I passed a Canadian on the street, I certainly would not hold a grudge against that individual for something their government is responsible for. Maybe I am alone in that.
