Hi,
was wondering what everyone's favorite 2-cycle motor oil is and why? Just bought some not so expensive stuff and I think it is causing me problems. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
thanks

Unless you're running a DFI, any TCW3 rated oils should do the trick, At least that's what I've been told. I always ran Merc oil in my Merc, and OMC oil in my old Evvy. But that is just me. I've not heard of any problems of any particular brand.

I think the gas you use will make a bigger difference in the performance of your motor. Especially if you leave the vent open, and don't use it for about 3 weeks. Remember, Gregger?

What type of problems are you having, Kyle?

Shep, the carb is gummed up. The gas was brand new and so was the oil. maybe the oil had been on the shelf for a long time? Does oil have a shelf life?
Does anyone one use a particular fuel injector/carb cleaner in your fuel to keep the system clean?
thanks

We use Amsoil. It's a synthetic oil, works great for us.

If the carb is gummed up, that is more than likely an old fuel problem. Even more likely, it is a problem that was on it's way before you bought the boat last year. Previous owner may not have properly maintained the motor, and used some old gas, didn't use Stabil in it during storage, etc.

I'd suggest you use some Seafoam, Tune Up, or other such product. Just running fresh gas through it won't clean out the gum deposits. You're gonna need some type of system cleaner, like those mentioned. See you local marine dealer, see what he recommends. If the carb needs to come off, it shouldn't cost too much.

I had a problem one time with my last motor on my Tuffy. I left the tank vent open for about 3 weeks. When I went out the next time, it was the first time I fished with Greg. The motor barely ran! I put in some fresh petrol, and it ran good then. Seems as though the volatiles in the fuel evaporated through the vent. Never figured that would happen in 3 weeks.

I always reccomend putting the OMC 2X4 fuel stabilizer in the gas even if used every week. On the bottle it has two different mixes they suggest, one for summer time use the other for winter. That should help some for the gumming I would think. OMC 2 cycle TCW3 oil also has carbon guard mixed in the oil from the factory. Helps prevent carbon build up. I'm not sure if MERC has products similar to these two but I know that stuff like pennzoil, quaker state, etc.. , despite meeting the standards for our motors are not the best choices. If you use other stabilizers in your gas I've heard very mixed things about them. When it comes to fuel system additives or oil for boats I only reccomend using the exact stuff used by the manufacture..I'll use merc stuff in a omc or omc stuff in a merc but not any of the other stuff. Also, some brands of gas may not be the best either, I saw a article a few years back where several engine maufactures were interviewed and all did not reccomend Amoco/bp, all seemed to agree that Citgo and I think 76 were good. Not sure what other brands they said. Maybe Mobil, not positive. Premium gas is also good though I seem to recall someone saying a certain motor it wasn't reccomended, your low octanes could cause some gumminng up.

Kevin, I was wondering about Amoco/bp, It's hard to find high octane around here, so you drive thirty miles just to fill the boat, and the only stations are BP. Thanks Doug

Not sure why they said bp/amoco wasn't reccomended. I think it may have had to do with additives. Strangely a majority of the on water gas stations I end up using are amoco/bp. I think if you stick with the higher octanes(89 on up) you shouldn't have any problems. I tried finding the article but with 10 years of 3 different fishing magazines to go through I am not having luck finding it.

I use Amsoil 2-Cycle Raceing Oil,full synthetic, less carbon buildup and more protection then other oils. The sound of the motor is even quieter through out the throttle curve.

Larry, I've heard good things about Amsoil stuff for cars. My question is this, how much time do you spend on the water each year? I noticed it says Capt. Larry at the bottom of your post so I am guessing your a guide, right?

Kevin,
Yes I guide on the Niagara River & Chautauqua Lake in NY.I spend over 100 days a year on the water, between musky, walleye, bass and perch trips.I'm also not easy on my 225 hp E.F.I. Merc. I run it hard pushing a 20' Tracker Targa 2000 glass boat.I highly recommend the Amsoil 2 Cycle Racing Oil,may cost about $4.00 more per gallon then Quicksilver Plus, but worth every penny. You will notice better performance out of your outboard right after you make the change.
