Posts: 1516 | I’m going to be running two Heix 9 and a Helix 10 off the starter battery this season does the 150 Mercury Verado have a alternator that will recharge the battery when running across the lake? I suspect it does but not sure | ||

Posts: 3508 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Hiya, The outboard will have an alternator so yes it will charge as you go across the lake. The only issue I could potentially see is you will be running down a starter battery which is designed for a quick drain and quick charge. Over the course of a couple of days, you might find your starting battery will not have enough to start your motor. I'd suggest a dual purpose battery for your main motor..one that has starting capabilities, yet still has the deep cycle slow drain capacity. I run two Humminbirds, and my radio off the main battery, but I run a dual purpose just for that reason. Some might disagree with my thinking, though... Steve | ||

Location: Eastern Ontario | A lot is going to depend on the length of your runs and how long you are casting and drawing down the battery. if anywhere where you could be stuck a long way from help I would be more comfortable with a starting battery and a second house battery for electronics connected to the pair would be an alternator charger that automatically directs the charge to the house battery when the starting battery is over I think around 13.5 volts. Today's electronics with their big screens and gps draw a lot more than units of 10 or 15 years ago add radios livewells and other toys draw can be substantial. Required starting battery type 12 volt absorbed glass mat (AGM) battery Required USA and Canada (SAE) starting battery type* 800 minimum marine cranking amps (MCA) with a minimum reserve capacity of 135 RC25 rating | ||

Posts: 31 | I have a 200 hp I4 Verado on my boat and a helix 9 and helix 10. all are running off of the same batter (Group 31 AGM). Never had a problem, and yes, the motor does recharge the battery when it is running. | ||

Posts: 3508 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Hiya, The mention of the AGM battery is not a specific requirement overall. Your battery will work just fine so long as it is fully charged. Evidently people have found that with a lead-acid battery, the battery ends up being in a constant state of discharge even while running due to a verado charging system that does not supply enough juice back to the battery. This can lead to the battery not being able to supply enough voltage to the motor on start-up at a later time, and the verado electrical system will throw fault codes due to lack of juice. From what I have been able to find (nothing solid at this point yet), the AGM battery somehow has a higher percentage of available juice at any point over a lead-acid battery, thus even on a discharge over time, a restart of the engine does not seem to throw any fault codes... Also, an AGM battery has a slower discharge rate over time when the battery sits as compared to a lead acid battery, so codes might show up upon restart as the batteries are at different charge levels. Thus the "requirement" of the AGM battery via the service Bulletin, which then will keep the majority of customers satisfied. I think so long as your battery is fully charged regardless of type before you start up, you will be fine. With today's stronger electronics being used, it may even be more helpful to isolate your starting battery and run a separate battery for your electronics just to keep discharge through the day down and keep battery charge for your motor as high as possible. Posts: 386 | Do yourself a favor and buy a separate battery for everything in your boat minus your trolling motor batteries(s); it's called a house battery in the marine world. Verado's are very thirsty for power....trust me on this one. Edited by Pat Hoolihan 3/5/2019 1:27 PM | ||

Assuming $100 for a battery it should cost about $250 MAX. | ||
