Posts: 457 | So, I'm curious, anyone build bucktails with singles rather than trebles? I've been toying with a couple different hook models, and am finding that I like the way they look, and move through the water as compared to a treble. I can't, however, verify the hook-ups as I've not been actually fishing them. I know there are a some out there, and I wonder what people would say in a "side by side" sort of comparison. You would think, logically, that the penetration of a single hook is better, and would allow for easier handling, all that jazz.

| horse apiece to me. single hooks come through cover much better. keel weight the frame of the bait, not the coil the hair is tied to, mount the single hook to ride up, and the bait comes through darn near anything. i also have yet to lose a fish on a single hook once hooked, but have missed a few nip-type strikes. treble hooks seem to stick a few more strikes/nips, but they catch a few more weeds. i've also lost a few seemingly well-hooked fish on trebles. | |||

That's somewhat my thinking on the singles. As well, the primary reason that I've been toying with singles on/ my bucktails instead of trebles. That and I have about 4,000 Mustad 34007 in 4/0-8/0. I figured that I may as well give 'em a shot instead of buying trebles.

Posts: 457 | Use a keel weighted coil, as opposed to an egg sinker or different slide on weight.

Posts: 32 Location: Sherry, WI | here's a keel-weighted frame. in this example, the loop on the end of the frame is in line with the keel weight, so to keep a single hook riding point up, no split ring would be used. i prefer to have the loop rotated 90 degrees so i can use a split ring to attach the hook and still keep the point up. don't forget the shrink tube! | not my idea. i got it from tfootstalker. just another way to keep a single hook riding point up, or any tail from rolling. combine the keel-weighted frame with a keel weighted single hook (try the 8/0 sluggo hook with 1/8 to 1/4 oz attached to the shank near the bend) and it will be very hard to roll that tail.
