Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | Howdy, I have a 10" jointed believer that I've had for years. The thing does not go deeper than 3 feet on the cast even on the deep setting, and other than a surface bait, I haven'y had much use for it. I keep hearing of guys using this as their go to bait. Are you using the straight model? I'd like to get another big crank other than the Jakes and grannies for Canada this year, and was wondering what it was you used. Also on the jointed 8", I've been having success with a firetiger/perch pattern that I can't find anywhere. It is similar to a "hot perch" pattern with black bars, green sides and orange belly. Where can I find another one. Also, are the swim whizs and believers created equal? Edited by Reef Hawg 2/25/2003 8:42 AM

Posts: 906 Location: Warroad, Mn | Hi: I've used 10" Believers for many-many years and have caught lots of big fish with them. To make the jointed one "behave" and run right you need to put a 1/4 or 3/8 OZ bell sinker on the front splitring. This gets the nose to stay down a little and the lure will run great. The bell sinker also slaps against the side of the lure, and that with the clicking of the joints creates one of the loudest lures these is. This works well in dark water or algae stained water. I also use the straight models a lot. The big round nose, and the bouyancy of these lures makes them surprisingly weedless. Try throwing them in a big cabbage weed bed on the LOTWs and see what happens. They are great lures! There has been several owners of the Drifter Tackle company, I'm not sure but I think there has been several colors that have been discontinued or changed some. Here's a link to there web site which shows the colors currently available. www.driftertackle.com Doug Johnson

Posts: 3518 Location: north central wisconsin | Thanks a million Doug!!! My friend Don Kempen(doesn't have a computer) also thanks you. Donnie is the one who has turned me onto Beleivers. I will try what you have mentioned!! Do you use the straight or jointed more?

Posts: 906 Location: Warroad, Mn | Reef Hawg: I use both, but tend to use the solids more when the water is clear, and in weeds. I generally will use the jointed more when the algae starts to show up, or if for some reason I think that today noise is good. A 10" jointed believer in 9$bass looks more like a big fat yellow bullhead swimming in the water than a big fat yellow bullhead does. Doug Johnson

Doug Johnson Doug why you go out and tell everyone that? We all know muskies don't eat smallmouth bass. It's the darndest thing that one color actualy looks totaly like something else. BTW we have a lot of those bullheads in our river and I though mud puppys was just a cool name but we have some of those in here as well.

Posts: 585 Location: Gaithersburg, Maryland | Durst Products (link on front page of this site) sells custom-painted Believers. Stan will also repaint any lure you have for a very affordable price. Ever try trolling that big plug? I use them occasionally and the 8" is my favorite trolling lure. I believe the jointed models actually go deeper than the straight ones. For their size, Believers seem to go thru the water very well with little drag (streamlined). One other trick I've heard is to drill a hole in the lure and fill it with some sort of oil (not sure what kind) and then seal it back up. This is supposed to make it either sink or go deeper - not sure which. I've heard Doug's suggestion a lot of times. I'm going to give a try myself.

Posts: 1939 Location: Black Creek, WI | After recently starting a similar post, I found this old one. Its posts like these that I can't ignore anymore. You hear so many great things about the Believer and Swim Whiz lures, however, these posts only say they are good baits.... and provide little detail in how to go about "fishing" them. If you just cast them out and reel 'em in.... I'll need some serious convincing (I can't help but twitch a crankbait, yet in my opinion these big bouyant bobbers twitch for crap). Please help make me a believer in the believer. Thanks for your help. jlong

Posts: 1936 Location: Eau Claire, WI | I troll them, use them for topwaters, or crank them shallow. I have never tried filling them with fluid or hanging a weight from them as DJ suggested, I do have some with larger rattles to make them louder. As a crank bait they don't run that deep. I don't think they were intended to. When I deep crank for suspendo's I like Slammers, Ernies, Jakes, Depthraiders. Cisco Kids are a favorite of another guy I know who fishes main basin fish allot. I have been trying the DDD but without success so far. Hollow baits like MMT's and Cisco Kids can be modified to suspend by drilling into the chamber and fill them with however many cc's of your favorite fluid you want to to get them to run deeper. The same should work for Believers. Yes I think they are good baits but like any tool, it has it's place and time. Hope this helped a little.

Posts: 2061 Location: Belgium | does anybody have a pic of one of those custom weighted believers they used to sell in the mid nineties? They were weighted with a JB weight system.

Posts: 1137 Location: Holly, MI | I love the Jointed Believers (or swim whizz). They are an awesome trolling lure for sure. I run them long out the back with no weight well behind my prop wash lures. As a crank bait they are great too. They have such a good action that they literly can just be cranked in (great for those lazy days or when you get tired of the fancy stuff). I have had good action on the 8 inchers but intend to try some of the tens this year. (Big lure , big fish?)
