Location: Grand Rapids, MI | So, Michigan cleared up the way they stated the law as it pertains to trolling MI/WI boundary waters. So, if you're on the MI side, troll away!!!
•You may fish (troll) from a motorboat with the motor running or a sailboat under sail except on the Wisconsin side of the boundary waters of Vilas County. |

If you do try it, be sure to keep it on the Michigan side. Sail trolling is as off limits as motor trolling in the areas where trolling is illegal in Wisconsin.

Location: WI | Sure would be easier to have one set of rules for a whole lake. That's how it is on the St Louis river between MN/WI. Keeps it simple, easier for enforcement also. |

| Why would you need a MI license if you are fishing an actual border water? You don't need a MI license to fish the MI side of those lakes that are split by the border. Do different laws apply to you just because you don't have a MI license even though you are obeying all the laws? |

From what I know, and I have no proof, is that in order to troll the MI side you need a MI license? If you are going to cast it you do not need a MI license. Reason being is casting is accepted by both states, but the trolling aspect is only allowed in MI. IN order to take advantage of the trolling then you would need to have a MI license which entitles you to fish by MI regulations on the MI side.
I know for bag limits on a lake like LVD if you held a MI license you could keep three walleyes caught on the MI side, but if you were on the WI side with a WI license only you could only keep two walleyes. This was several years ago when I was talking with a warden on the water and how it was explained to me by him.
MI anglers, do you know if what I am speaking of is true, and do you know if it is listed in regs anywhere? |
