Location: Wakefield, MI | How long should a pawl last under normal conditions? So far this year we've worn out the pawl on 2 Abu Garcia's (Record 61 and C3 6501) and 2 Shimano's (both Cardiff 401A), that's more than normal, usually go through one a year I guess this year they all just lined up, but it seems like we go through more than is normal. Maybe I have to clean and lube the worm gear more often? All of the lakes I fish I drive down 5-10 miles of dirt road with the rods in the box of the truck (no rod lockers in my boat).
What can I use to clean the worm gear and lube it, if that is the problem? |

| Yah I used to go through them all the time a couple a yr in the c3's and stuff! I used to clean them and oil them often but it never mattered. And then i got fed up with it and tried some ceramic pawls and there awesome! I dont oil them or do anything and they have lasted for 3 yrs so far and going strong! i never replaced the worm gear or anything just slapped in a new ceramic pawl! there abit noisy at times on the cast but fine on the retrieve |

| Safe your old toothbrush next time you buy a new one and use the old one for cleaning out the worm gear. |

| I usually get two seasons out of them. When they start screwing up, you can flip them around for a quick fix, but they're not long for this world. Sand and dirt just grind them to nothing after a short time.
What you can do if you really want to is carry an old tooth brush, and clean the worm gear every couple days. But I'm lazy - I just grease them up every couple days and carry spares with me for every reel. |

| PikeMaster, do those eventually tear up the worm gear? I've always heard that you should change the worm gear when you replace the pawl, but I've never seen any visible signs of wear on any of my worm gears, so I left them alone and have just always changed the pawl when it wears out. |

Yes a bad Pawl can and will tear up the worm gear, ck it with a magnifing lens and make sure the groove ridges are not rounded if so replace it and the pawl. |

Location: oswego, il | One other thing that will kill a pawl is ice. If your reel is icing up the levelwind will push the water to each end and ice forms there, once there is too much ice it blocks the movement and breaks it. |

Location: MN | Couple other things. Get some of the cheap neoprene reel covers when your rods are traveling the dirt roads that will cut down in the dust and grit that will wear the pawl quicker. Also as a quick fix if a pawl is worn down and you don't have a spare you can put an extra wAsher/spacer on top of it below the cap to help what's left to engage. |

Location: MN | Pikemaster, similar question to a worn pawl wearing the worm gear - is a ceramic one any harder on the worm gear than the standard ones? Does Shimano carry ceramic pawls or is that someone else's aftermarket? For TE400 and the like. |
