Posts: 2323 Location: Stevens Point, WI | I think both units are solid. The Vexilar has been around longer, with very few bad things ever said about one. The Marcum units seem to be proven, very little bad said about these either. The Vexilar only has 400 watts peak-to-peak where as the Marcum has 1500 peak-to-peak.

You would have to go to a FL-18/20 to even begin to compare and still the LX-3 would be the better choice. We used a 12 for part of a season nd had lots of interference issues with it along side the marcums and IMO the displas are fuzzier than on other Vex's.

That said I have on order the FL-12. I have troubles going away from such a good product and company. Ultimately the things that appear to be better on the Marcum really doesn't make a huge difference in my opinion. So I went with whom I feel comfortable with.

Posts: 272 | Talk about flashers tends to bring out the brand purists. Looks like everyone was real civil here, but you're bound to get into Chevy v. Ford territory. Marcums are sorta known as 'pounders' because they throw out so much power and guys who fish around Marcum users tend to notice interference. If you're "function-phobic," below might not be the best option for you, but being a muskie guy, I'm sure you're better at boat electronics than alot of anglers. Some of the units from Lowrance and H-bird, prolly others, would be a fine fit, too. And about the same price or even quite a bit less. I used several different styles of flasher-only units before I settled on the Lowrance x67c "Ice Machine." I think I paid $299 for the whole ice setup. Lots of options, perhaps the best of which is the ability to go from graph mode to flasher mode on the same unit. Mine rides on the dash of my boat in the summertime. Honestly, I use it in graph mode on hard water, except for a few specific situations. Some points to ponder. Nobody asked that I saw.... you never said... but I assume you're using it for ice fishing? -Eric Edited by muskie-addict 12/16/2010 10:54 PM

The flat screen is a plus on the fl-12..... keeps snow from accumulating in the screen. Both are going to do what you want them to..
