I live pretty close to the Mississippi in southern WI, and I was wondering, because I have heard some rumors, if anyone knows of any population of catchable muskies in this river? I have heard that there are muskies in the river in Minnesota near where the river begins, but I don't understand why they wouldn't be sustainable in this area given the massive backwater areas, deeper channels and plenty of forage.

Any input on this would be great.

There are some out there caught once in awhile, but a lot of them are escaping from other places. I would love it if muskies were stocked in the Mississippi...it is an awesome river.

It would be awesome if there were alot in it, its so big and has tons of forage, they could go to massive porportions.

I have seen quite a few caught in Prescott by walleye fisherman. That is right niext to the croix though so I assume they came out of there.

Aren't muskies naturally occurring in the mighty miss? Otherwise, fish from the croix and a bunch of lakes along the way find they're way into it i'm sure.

From what I've heard fishable populations really start North of St Cloud MN.

If you look at the dnr stocking reports they have been putting ski in spring lake for a few years now. Not sure if they are fishable pop or size yet. They would be getting out to the river just above the Hastings dam. I haven't tried to fish them yet. Boat problems kept me from a lot this summer.

The fish they put in spring are typically fry. I know that some survive, but it's unknown how many do.

I've been lobbying the DNR to stock (or give us permission) the Mississippi below the Ford Dam. They've been dragging their feet for some reason and haven't been very excited about it.

That would be awesome if the stocked below the Ford Dam. I fish eyes there in the spring, good bass and eye action.
A buddy I used to work with Caught a 42" under the 35w bridge before it fell in the river.

Is that the 42" that's hanging on the wall at Motor Clinic in Bloomington?

No he was bass fishing and let it go. Caught it on a little rapala, makes you wonder if you hit some of the hot spots on the Miss. around the metro with a big bucktail or some rubber if you'd run into some Muskies.

I just talked to my cousin today, who sells boats at Holmen Marine in Holmen, WI and he said that a walleye fisherman apparently caught a 42"er at the Dresbach dam yesterday. Ya never know I guess.
