i joined about 20 others for the Cap City Muskies Inc outing in eastern Iowa over the weekend.

we started by doing some trolling Saturday morning to try and figure out the conditions on the lake with water temps, baitfish, etc.
we were very surprised at how clear the water was in most of the lake, you could easily see stuff on the bottom in 9' deep; the locals that joined us said it was the clearest they had ever seen the lake. water temps in most of the lake were in the 53-54 degree range. we found slightly higher temps at 55-56 degrees in one area where the water had a bit more stain and only about 4' of visibility. we guessed that the slight stain in that area might have been helping hold heat.

we'd heard about a couple 40"ers caught on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning in this area on natural color small crankbaits along the creek channel, so we focused our casting efforts there. things were slow Saturday morning, but picked up after lunch, and we had interest from a dozen fish, a couple of which went into figure-8s and 2 that were very hot on baits: mostly erratic gliders or twitching minnow baits in natural patterns. buttt...no fish caught. the rest of the outing group had similar reports in the afternoon.

we got up a bit later on Sunday morning with a poor weather forecast of strong north winds and rain coming in. however, it was overcast, calm, and warm so we headed back to the same area. we had one folow around 0830 on an erratic jerkbait, so i tied on a natural pattern DDD to get a bit more erratic, and about 1/2 hour later i got bit on the pause. after a nice fight we had a nice 43" fish in the net. not a bad way to start off the year at all!

things went quiet after this and by 12noon the cold north wind was blowing so we headed home, driving through the heavy rain.

Nice looking fish good one to start the year off on. We are having a musky team tournament on Pleasant creek on Sunday May 3rd. The fish should be on there post spawn feed and fishing should be very good. This is Iowa's old famous lake X that Steve Jonesi and Steve Cady developed the Weagle on. We still have room for more teams to enter we would love to see some intrest from out of state fisherman that are looking to get out. You can check it out at muskieclub.com under events. Registrations are also there.

Cool,
Good for you, Mike.
Did you rub any slime in the new boat ??

I like the water shot also, I picked up a good camera this winter that also takes under water shots..... I'll be breaking it in next week..

congrats on a nice fish.

Is this the first time an Iowa fish made the Home Page of M1st? Just curious, only been on this site for a couple of years.

Roy,
My BC fish made it a couple years ago. Not many though, that's for sure.

Lambeau, that spot looks really familiar

Congrats.

Here are the two 40 inchers that Matt Hill caught on Friday and Saturday at the Cap City Outing. The 40 1/2 on Friday was in the sunshine and Saturday's 40 incher was overcast with rain on and off. Matt caught his fish on a Bucher Baby ShallowRaider. Both hit on the pause as well. Not much happening on Sunday for us and we also were on the road home in the rain at noon. Nice to get the skunk out of the boat so early in the year.

I forgot to mention that Tall Matt is only 6'7" and that is why they look so small.
