Does anyone know if the MN DNR ended up stocking muskies in Poke last fall? What are stocking plans down the road as far as numbers/frequency? Any info would be great, thanks.

Yes!

I have a Bass buddy that fished Pokeg all the time and he is PISSED OFF.

Along with alot of the homeowner's on the lake, etc.

However, he did tell me one thing, he was very IMPRESSED at how the musky guys worked and banded together to get it done.

It would be nice if someone from either the DNR or another reliable source with actual knowledge would take the time to publish information on how this stocking will affect the local fishery. The local paper was quick to publish an article on how muskies decimated other lakes based on many comments from ignorant people who don't know anything on how muskies affect an ecosystem. They just claimed it was several lakes where muskies ate everything until the lake was empty and the muskies died off from starvation (if that doesn't sound about as far-fetched as they come).

We banned together to get it done but now we need to further educate so that the fishery we worked for is protected.

Midge is back from the dead!

Tell your bass buddy that they were already in there. You can also tell him that Pokegama is a historic water as it's connected to the Mississippi.

Targa, you're correct about the press. We wrote the local paper a letter concerning this and I don't think it got published. Good news doesn't sell I guess.

with the smelt and whitefish base, there is no way that muskies being introduced (even though they are already there) into the lake will have any negative affect. The amount of smelt in that lake is enormous, so big that, that will probably be the only thing they eat. The only problem that may occur is those fish being dumped into the lake and then exiting into the river system right away. With that said I do believe that it is the right move, even though they are already there. People who live on the lake, myself included, don't understand the ecosystem. Muskies will not deplete a fishery.

Glad to see others wrote them as well. I wrote to the paper also about how they presented the information as factual but did not provide any information as examples or proof of this. I did though provide them with a number of lakes in the area that have muskies stocked in them and that are considered some of the best walleye, bass, crappie, or pike waters in the area. Many of these lakes have resorts on them and thrive off of having a great fishery. I'm not going to preach to choir and you said it well Treats....

I wonder if the editor or writer at the news paper owns a home on Pokeg!?!? (Agenda maybe?)

Another lake to take for example is Lake St. Clair. It has some of the best walleye and smallmouth fishing around. And look at the muskie population there!

I was actually talking to a bass guy just today that was fishing bass on Pokegama last summer and got a 28" musky out there. This is before the stocking from last fall. So it's nice to know that not only is there a small population in there already, but they're reproducing!

I did try and tell him that there were natural in there because connected to the Mississippi and he called BULL S**T on me.

He said all the musky guys liked to claim that fact to get fish stocked, but in the 15+ years he and everyone else he knows have fished it, not one person he knows has even had a follow from a ski, let alone caught one.

He shut me down on that one in a hurry, and I've know this guy since I was a kid, so I believe him.

I've actually bass fished the lake with him and had an awesome time about 8 years ago.

You know what's funny is that Jay Gould and Little Jay Gould are in the MN Muskie Lake books and people actually fish them for musky, granted not a large popluation but they're there, and there is a river connecting Little Jay Gould to Pokegama... hhhmmmm... I'm sorry but it doesn't take a whole lot of process of deduction to figure that out. It's a low density fish on a large lake with nothing but natural reproduction so not everyone bass fishing is going to see a musky follow. That lake also has a ton of boating pressure and there are a ton of areas for these fish to be. There's Lake Trout in there also but people who fish the lake for years never catch one of those either.

But I hear you Midge.. it can be a loosing battle and most of the time I don't even argue with people anymore. Not worth it.
