Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> Double Follows

Lets hear some stories of getting two or more Muskies to follow a lure. I had two mid 30 inch fish follow a Wood Tick a few years back on the Minocqua Chain. They both came out from under a dock - Mid August. They spaced themselves about 3 feet apart - followed 5 feet behind and a foot below the lure. After escorting the lure about 30 feet they simply sunk in unison. These fish were almost identical in size and appearance.
Many articles over the years portrait the Musky to be a loner. I do remember back in the late 1970's Tony Rizzo talked of "Roving Wolfpacks" of Muskies at different times of the year - Muskies working together to find and hunt forage.
Any of you have any interesting tales ? - Maybe there is a pattern here.

Were you drinking to much beer that day, sounds like you were seeing double. Just kidding, that's never happened to me.

Hi,

I had this happen in my boat this year.

My wife (who is not a Musky fisherwoman) pulled her lure from a 40"er because "that thing is too big to catch". It followed back to the boat at least 10 times. Once with a much smaller one beside it. She also caught her first, A 36"er, earlier that day.

Hi Pat. Just had that happen a few weeks ago on Bone Lake. A small fish came in very hot but flared off at the boat. When the fish flared, it reavealed a much larger fish coming in low and slow. That fish came to the bait but soon left after a brief fig 8 dance. Unfortunately, no fish caught but a cool event none the less. Reminded me how Bass will follow others that are hooked like they want a piece of the action too.

In the mid 70''s, Man vs. Musky magazine published a cover photo of muskies in a pack and cruising. All were very similar in size. I think it might be one of the earlier sources of the "loner" myth being obliterated. I think the In-Fish guys were talking about that around the same time too. I''m not sure of the "co-operative" idea about the pack and hunting. Could be just a bunch of solo opportunists getting together for an easy dinner.

Last year my son had three (3) fish follow a Topraider, one fish hit and missed, the second took a swipe, but the third ate it result he boated a nice 38 incher. Not to stop there after the fish was released we returned to casting and the other two remaining fish followed his topraider again but he was unable to hook up. NO I was not drinking or dreaming that's just his luck, it was on this same trip that he also caught a 23 inch smallmouth (Released) and a 28 inch walleye (released), in a few years he will be old enough to play the lottery maybe I won't have to work anymore.

It happened to me this spring. I had two smaller fish side by side following the bait. One vered off and then the other. Two of about 50 that I saw that day. Did not catch even one.

Similar stories to the above but the only difference would be I had two fish follow a bucktail in on the Minocqua chain. The bigger one 40inch (released)ate the bait and the smaller fish whack the big one a moment after it grab the bait, must of been jealous I guess.

I was fishing last summer when I was getting follows from perch so I decided to do an 8 to see if the perch would follow it well it did and all the sudden a small ski came in from the left at light speed and swiped it. [:sun:]

I have had a good double follow once and Bill Schwartz witnessed it one day in Canada. I was twitching a 7" Slammer and two identical 45" muskies followed behind it side by side. At about ten feet from the boat I yelled at Bill, right or left on my eight. He only responded with "Holy ----", so since he was no help, I took right and of course both fish went left.

Not two fish behind the same bait, but I did have two fish on at the same time trolling by myself. I lost the one on the first rod I grabbed, then I got the fish on the second rod. Talk about a chinese fire drill.

Had two fish, one mid 30's, one low 40's, follow a 8 inch believer last summer.
Was fishing over the top of very shallow cabbage.
Got each one to follow by themselves on the next two casts.
No hook ups, but it was cool to see.
On the first follow, with both fish, they were about a foot behind the bait and it seemed as though they were trying to push each other out of the way, fighting for position.

I had 2 follows at once too! I was reeling in my buctail when a small 30" fish was behind it. Right behind him was an upper 30" fish. I was wondering if they were both after my lure or if the bigger one behind was after a Musky meal.

Jason story was true and pretty impressive!

I have had two fish follow out on Pewaukee only once. I had a low and upper 30 inch fish follow a bucktail at the same time one spring day.

In Canada I went to a small carry in lake known for a lot of fish but all small, we had multiple follows from 2 and once from 3 muskies at one time. Almost all of the fish where under 30 inches however, but it was pretty neat to see that many fish.
