Subject: Moving???

OK guys, serious help needed here.

Background...
I am currently living north of Madison, WI. with 6 years working for the State. I make about 40k a year and not topped out. Wife has steady full time work at 20k and topped out with the exception of contract raises. We have owned our house <10yrs and have 2 daughters still in school.

I should be getting a call on Monday to see if I want to accept a voluntary transfer to Vilas County (Eagle River/St. Germain area). The State in their infinite wisdom gives us a maximum of 3 days to decide yay or nay. I have wanted to do this since I was about 5 years old, about 30 years, so my opinion is extremely biased. Wife on the other hand has always been one who doesn''t like change. She is afraid to quit her job and move the kids, sell the house etc..... We passed a transfer to Forest County last year because it was too far out from anywhere big according to the wife.

I know the inevitable answer but we really do l**e (Jason- didn''t know if we could use that word on this board) each other and divorce really isn''t an option []. Question is...what would you do??

Any input, especially from someone who lives up there and knows area would be great. Cost of living, housing, school district info would help too. We are looking at Northland Pines or Three Lakes School Districts.

Hey Sponge, your opinion is greatly valued.

Good Luck and Be Safe,
Scott

PS To make things more difficult transfer would take effect on the 12th of August, only about 2 1/2 weeks to get settled, put house up for sale, get kids transferred to new dist etc...

I have typed up this and submitted this twice already, but it didn''t get posted. I am aguably the world''s slowest typer so the system probably thought that I feel asleep!
I will break this into pieces and see if that helps.
Everyone of us would love to move north to hunt and fish 24 hours a day, but that has nothing to do with making the decision.
1)Are your wife and kids used to a large support group of family and friends for their daily activities?
2)Does your lovely wife have interests or activities that she would have to give up or could they be transfered north as well? Check into outlets which may be in place up north for her.
3)Does your wife and kids have interests in outdoor activities? Cross country skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing?
4)As bad as you may think winters are in the Madison area, they will be worse up north. Negotiate a series of regular mini vacations or regular vacations to destinations of her choosing. It may be a weekend escape in February to a hotel with a pool, or a trip to Mall Of America which actually is a good thing. Cabela''s is only 35 miles south of Mall of America! Provide for regular visits to, and by close friends and family. Whatever you agree to you MUST follow through!

Hey this is working!!
5)Does she like to read? Find out where the closest libraries are and be prepared to get her there. Does she like to take classes? Find out where the closest UW-Extensions and Tech Schools are.
6)How close will you be to your church and the kid's school?
That will be important to start a support group of people with common interests and kid's activities which they can do immediately.
7)Does your wife want to work outside of the home or does she need to? Are there employement opportunities in something she would want? Is lesser pay acceptable for the same job?
8)Is this a black mark on your record if you turn down another request for you to transfer? Is this a Career move forward or horizontal?
9)Is this position one that has any possibility of being cut from the State budget anytime soon?
10)Would you be expected to move again in a few years if you moved north or is it something that you could do for a long time and be happy?

I love it when a plan comes together!
11)Does this position pay enough to support your family in the lifestyle that they are accustomed to, if you wife chooses to not find an outside job or if she would be laid off?
12)How close will you be to grocery stores, hospitals, doctor's offices, dentist's offices, sports shops (I threw that in!)
13)Is there a reliable internet provider so that you can continue to post on "MuskieFirst.com" the world's best website? Did I say that right, Mr. Worrall?
Much of what I talked about relates first and formost to your wife's happiness which is very, very important. If she isn't happy, it is not likely that you will be able to be over the long haul! This decision will take alot of prayers and some good luck. It is a very exciting time!
Oh yea, Sponge Bob called and said to put your wife into a sleeping bag throw her over your shoulder and just move up there! (he didn't say that....yet! but I get the shakes if I stay serious for this long!)
Good Luck!

I great friend of mine is Tom Hickson, the owner of North Twin Lodge which is only 10 minutes from Eagle River. Tom and Kay have raised two boys after moving up-North from out of state which is even a greater change that which you are considering. Tom would be a great source of exactly the type of first hand un-biased information which you need. His telephone number is 715-545-FISH, his e-mail is: [email protected] .
Call after 4PM today as it is move out/in day at the resort.
Use my name when you talk to him.

Like Jason said.... nothing wrong w/ following your dream!!..... unless she crosses main street + you step in front of a Coke Cola truck + spend 19 yrs./3mos. in a coma! This happened to me + now I can't even follow 1 finger in front of my face; just came to a couple of years ago!
* In all seriousness dude Steve had some good advice; in fact I may buy the book he just wrote on here! LOL.... there are many things to consider but in the long run it boils down to what is best for the WHOLE FAMILY. Since there are different feelings involved, you must look down the road; unfortunately you gotta start looking soon. Will there be ill feelings from the brass where you work? Can you vacation where you would be moving to? What do the youngsters have to say? NOTHING + I mean nothing is worth breaking up a family! Jobs, friends etc. come + go but the Good Lord put you guys together for a reason + to most he gave enough sense to work things out! The worse part is the fact that you have to decide so soon... that really bites as it puts an undue amount of stress on all involved. If it can work w/out too much conflict + all of you are 99.9 per cent sure then grab, go + don't look back but make triple dog sure that is what is right for you. Now I'm stressed out from your situation + feel a domestic quarrel coming to this house! [;)] I would like to move up that way but my wife makes nigh what I do + it would be hard to replace her $$$ but then again she could stay here + come to visit me + little sponge at Christmas! Basically fiqure can you live on your $$ 'til she finds something else? A move can be great at times but on short notice it is a hard decision. Since your job is the main thing I guess a lot would depend on that. Sometimes you just have to close your eyes + jump.... let me think some more since I've been up since 3:30a.m. + see what others have to say! [:sun:]

I live in Madison Wisc also and I have spent 7 days up North in St Germain each year for the past 25 years. Madison is a very beautiful city with good muskie fishing on the Madison Chain. Education opportunities is second to none also in Madison. Medical facilities are excellent in both areas with the UW Hospital, Madison Meriter, and St Mary''s located in Madison and the Howard Young Medical Center located in Woodruff that is affilitated with the Marshfield clinic. I think bottom line is what employement oportunities are in the St Germain area that are in your wife''s field and for your children, what affect will that have on their education fields, friendships, and their recreational activites they are now in at Madison. For me, I have been employed by the State of Wisconsin for 32 years and I would never leave Madison until I retire. Madison is a beautiful city to live in and has it all for me. Muskie, Northern, and pan fishing on the Madison lakes, Trout fishing in the rural areas, great small game, deer, and turkey hunting in the rural areas and of course UW sports. However haaving said all of this, the door will not hit me in the rear end to explore opportunites in Northern Wisconsin after I retire becasue fall in the North woods, is second to none. Good Luck! []

Take the transfer. I have my home of 18 years outside of Rhinelander, and have to work in southern Wisconsin as a result of a change in my position. Now I have an apartment in Lake Mills, and my beautiful home on LOTS of hunting acres up North. I cannot wait to get home at weeks end, every week. 213 miles is one heck of a commute!

I haven't spent alot of time in that are but the times I have the residents in that area are second to none. I've traveled from Florida to Canada this year and the people of the Eagle River area are heads above the rest.
