I was out fishing a local lake last night with a friend of mine we were fishing deeper water (which I rarely do) throwing a triple D it came back to the boat and it felt like a snag. Not thinking that I was in 20ft of water I did not nail it up she came quite possibly a 50 my partner who has been at them for 25 years said she was 50. Why oh why did I not set the hook so she spit my triple D and left me sleepless. This is not the first time I have been asleep at the wheel but most definetly the most painful I thought I would share my pain with some guys who have been there before (I hope).

I relearned the lesson about big fish again last Friday, in a Walleye tourney. You have to do everything right with big fish, because they will always find your error, exploit it, and get off. Mine was with a bad crawler harness, and I lost a ten lber at the boat. Cost me a chance at making the cut, and fishing for thousands, and not cashing a check.

I got in the habit when fishing for ski's that anything feels strange on your line, set the hook. It's cost me a few lures, and a rod over the years, but I think it's also put more fish in the net.

was talking to bigmo about that very thing in the boat last night. i've got 3 heartbreakers that haunt me and he's got a doozy ... but, on the bright side even though you didn't get the photo opportunity ... that event will stay in your mind as an experience for the rest of your life ... spin the possitive side and the story is always worth telling and hearing.

What's done is done....don't beat yourself up over it. Look at it as a lesson learned....next time your triple d stops in 20' of water, try to break that rod.

We have all made mistakes over the years...the key is to learn from your mistakes. It is all part of the process of becoming a better angler. We can all keep improving....there isn't a single angler out there that can't get better.

A few years ago me, Boro and Luke_Chinewalker were fishing Webster....Luke says "#*^@it, I've got a snag". He rips and pulls it for a few seconds, then its off. A. there are no snags in Webster and B. we were over 45ft. of water. Nice bite marks in that bagleys when he brought it back to that boat.

I STILL, after more than 30 years fishing these stupid fish, have fubars like that now and again. Last week on the Goon I was reeling in a spinnerbait when the line suddenly went slack; I was looking right at the water where the lure was and didn't see the hit. Wha...? That second or two cost me a nice muskie because she dropped the lure before I reacted. It happens, especially when the mind is engaged with several things at once. Sled's right, it'll be a memory you will keep, even more so than some of the fish you catch.

Shane,
Sad story, but we all have them and best thing to do is not do it again...
Lake A has nice fish too?
About 3-4 weeks ago, I lost a big fish on Lake W - she bent my hook, but again more my fault. Fishing the current and the fish was not moving, but the boat was, right towards the rocks. I went to add some power to the trolling motor and sent the slide to 10...a little too much power and since the fish was not moving, something had to give...still makes me sick. By far the biggest (well at least heaviest) fish I hooked into and could feel the weight...and that beats the tail hooked 45 in Kinkaid.
Best advice I heard once...Hook sets are free!

I was working a TR twitcher in while talking to my partner, just pulling, pausing, reeling up, repeat. we were in an area where he had a 45 or so follow earlier in the day, after he peppered this spot, he moves the boat, I make a cast start my retrieve, and on the next pull, I have what feels like a big pile of weeds on my line, (we were fishing heavy weeds btw) so I reel down, keep pulling it towards the boat, it almost felt like I was dragging a log through the water. Not once did I ever have a headshake, run, it was coming in dead straight, the light was at the right angle on the water so you couldnt see down until it was right next to the boat, well, we look down, and were almost as suprised as the 45 that had my bait sideways in her mouth! hehehe, that fish woke up so quick when she saw us, she pertan#*^@ear tore the rod out of my hands.
I dragged that fish a full cast length, not too mention, never set the hook, but she was quite clamped down on my twitcher, needless to say, no freespool when she took off ended up the same as everyone elses story. f#$*!
that was 1 of 3 nice fish I lost that weekend.

Bummer Shane, but remember she's still waiting for you. If not her, her big sister

Heart break is a good thing. It makes you appreciate the big fish that much more.
