Muskie Fishing -> General Discussion -> Big or Small?

This season seems to be the year of SMALL baits. Most of the fish I've been lucky enough to catch this year have come on 6" baits. Usually, I go right to the big stuff so this is unusual for me.

Are others doing better this year on smaller baits too? Typically larger baits get better and better as the season progresses... but I'm beginning to wonder if the smaller lures are gonna keep producing right till ice-up this year. What's your prediction... and any guesses as to why smaller seems better this year? Have I missed something in year's past?

The only decent fish that I`ve moved this year have all been on hair. Can`t get a fish to look at, much less eat, anything made out of wood or plastic. Maybe it`s just an eating disorder. Beav

Jlong,

I hear ya on the small bait thing. The other day I tried all my big baits with no luck. So I decided to crack out a small bass size spinnerbait. Within an hour I had landed two fish the largest being 40 inches. The largest fish we have landed this year 53" was caught on a 6 inch plug.....

All my fish this year have come on large baits, especially ten inch Jakes.

The fish I've been catching in this stretch of hot weather are smashing smaller than average size bucktails 6" white tail/#6 french blade. I've been burning it over the cabbage and the deep coontail that is starting to fill out. I haven't had any follows on it just hits. I threw a Buchertail mogambo the other night and had follows only so maybe it is the lures size and the ability to fish it alot faster.

My 2 cents,

Seems to be the opposite for us this year, using bigger baits than ever and scoring pretty well. I think its awful difficult to generalize musky lure-eating habits. The fish by nature defy logic, categorization, and predictability, eh!?

Duke,
You are so correct. During my trip to LOTW, the small reef hawg saw the most water time.... and caught all the skis for us. Our buddies in another boat almost exclusively fished 10" Jakes... and that is what they caught all their skis on.

The glory of these message boards is that you can use them to see if what is working for YOU is actually a pattern or simply a "self fulfilling prophecy". I don't exactly see a pattern developing.... but if I can continue to catch fish on 6" baits rather than 10" baits... my shoulders will really appreciate it[8)]!

Big has been good for me,but depending on what body of water,I have seen action on small lures.0723[:halo:]

I agree with you Jlong,

This year has been the year for small baits. Seems to me the fish are not as agressive as most years, and small baits are easier to trick them to into hitting.

I live in southern Wis. Big time wet early, high water, good spawn, good spawn relates to good hatch, good hatch makes good feed, good feed makes baitfish of all sorts stay shallow, as long as weather applies, spawn late for some, clash of the small titans, weather gets hot, another late spawn from those pulled from early spawn because of early cold weather, everybody looking small, from small up to small tall. Lots of eats that look small because there is now an influx of lots of small in perspective to what is bigger to it whatever. Ummm The sandflea eats the phitoplasm, the sandflea gets eaten by the two inch shiner, the two inch shiner gets eaten by the six inch bluegill, the six inch bluegill gets eaten by the seventeen inch bass the seventeen inch gets chowed by the thirty seven inch Northern, the thirty seven inch northern gets chowed by the next world record.
Okay, start at the smallest work your way up when the year, the weather and all relates and now you understand why everything at some points seems small. Most everything seems small this year because in some ares of the country and state are small because of the spawning year. Everything eating the spawn is small because their feed is great, their benifit is the muskies buffet. Nature relates to itself, and we are all nature. Everybody meditate and fish. Mmmmmm.[:blackeye:]

Cheese and rice! What was I on last night! Actually to answer the question, I have been having great success on larger spoons and mid-range baits around seven, or eight inches. My usually cranks are not producing. The Buchers and such. I actually have two fish on an old Kid bait I found in my box.
