Location: Oconomowoc, WI | I'm considering trying to fix my Tranx 400HG that I've had for the last few years. It has been my workhorse reel for the last few years and has worked pretty much flawlessly. On a recent trip to Canada it started to not fully engage on the cast, and then it pretty much locked up.
The spool still spins freely, but the handle won't turn. I've watched a youtube videos, and it looks like a pretty easy reel to break down. I was considering trying to fix it myself so that I could get it back into action sooner than if I sent it in.
I figured that someone else might have faced the same issue and figured out the fix, so I could shorten my learning curve. Thanks in advance.

| I haven't had that issue but Tranxes are very easy to repair. If you haven't tried it before, I recommend putting a towel down on your workbench so parts don't roll away and filming yourself as you disassemble it. |

| Just had mine in and serviced and have had three go to #*#* in Canada as well. Feel like the cast control on all of them are junk at best. Now sounds like it wants to engage on every cast. Going to email Shimano and see. Also heard a rumor that next years model will be redone. |

| Hmmm. I used a 401 Tranx HG provided by the lodge I was staying at on Eagle 2 weeks ago and was very impressed. Casting in high winds, bouncing around, never had a backlash or any other issues. Worked great. Was thinking about picking one up, even though I really like my Daiwa reels. Guess I need to do some research. |

Location: Walker, MN | I've had 5 of these reels and am overall satisfied. My main complaint is that certain people's casting style makes the power handle rotate and engage the reel while casting. Roughly half of my client have this problem, even though many are seasoned casters. This problem gets worse when the reel gets worn-in for a few seasons. I had the same issues with Abu's too. A good fix is to buy the Geomexus carbon fiber power handle, which weighs almost nothing. With this much lighter handle, it all but eliminates the premature engaging problem, and can save on broken parts in the reel as well. It makes your whole set up feel lighter too, a nice upgrade imo. |

| I have both a 500 PG and 400 PG and love them both. Late last fall I fished a day where we started out in below freezing temps and 400 started to freeze up and the other fishermen reels were fine so the guide gave me a Bondy to jig and it worked out fine. A muskie liked my Bondy it was a good day. |

| I have 2 of the 400 HGs. I like them...but I had one lock up on me in Canada last year. I had nice fish hit a glide bait about 10 feet out. I think I might have had my thumb resting on the thumb-bar (which seems natural to me when I palm the reel) but when I tried setting the hook and cranking I likely depressed the thumbar at the same time thus causing the reel to completely locked up on me. Hard to say as it all happened too fast.
So I fought the fish for a few seconds but the split-ring on one of the hooks opened up and the fish swam off. I could not crank the fish in and I could not get it to free-spool such that I could thumb the spool.
In hind sight, I should have backed off the drag and let the fish swim out further until I could figure out wht to do. I ultimately was able to make it crank by thumping the crank handle really harder than I wanted to. But the reel locked up a few times after that episode so I put it away as I couldn't trust it any longer.
I sent the reel to Mats Reel Repair over the winter and he fixed it for me. Unfortunately my life priorities are all screwed up and I have not yet had a chance to try the repaired reel. But I am headed to Canada next week and will give it the taxi test.
I am a rookie here so I would appreciate any advice on how not to hold my reel. I think I may need to keep my thumb off the thumb bar.
I'm also curious how many of you leave the reel engaged through your figure 8 vs punching the thumbar right before you start the 8. I've heard of guys doing it both ways and not sure which is the correct approach. Any advice here would be appreciated. |

Location: Mt. Zion, IL | there is a tab inside that you should replace once a year that keeps the handle from engaging so easily. they are literally $1 from Shimano. Reel maintenance has got to be the most overlooked item for fishermen. This comes from someone who used to service reels before I had kids and priorities changed. My time is worth more now than the money I made working on reels. |
