Anyone know where I can find a printable map of Horsehead in Vilas County that is fairly accurate. The only maps I can find, including a map chip that a friend used shows up to ten foot depths where I can visually see rocks above the surface. I like this lake but I'm scared sh*tless that I'm gonna trash my boat on some rocks.

Thanks,
Jaimy

I know it's not exactly what your looking for, but, many of the rocks are visible by looking at google earth images.

There are some big bars and rocks on that lake. However, the size of the lake is small enough where you don't need to race around too fast. Once you get a general idea of where things are you should be fine. Lots of awesome structure out there. Take your time, feel it out, pay attention and you will be fine. Fun lake to fish!

Not a great map by any stretch of the imagination but the DNR website has printable lake maps. I use them as a general guide for lakes not on my map chip or available on paper. They're also useable for scouting from home.

Thanks for the replies. I have printed all Vilas county maps I could get on Lake Link to use as "rough Guides". I by no means trust them to speed around but they have been very helpful.

Take the other guys advice and just go slow out there. It is a very small lake and no need to run. If I remember right, the bad rock bars are over in the section of the lake near the creek that goes to Armour Lake. Go over there on a sunny day and look around. You will find them. One of them is very large.

I respect the "take it slow" comments but I don't want to hit a rock bar even at an idle. I'm just amazed that most of the maps of different lakes are at least somewhat reliable but this one has ten foot depth discrepencies.

If you have a smartphone, get the Navionics app. Its got a pretty detailed map of the lake.

Rocks are your friend ... on that lake the reed line is clean, you can see the rock structure easily so just go over there, get on your trolling motor and mark em up on your GPS, or if you don't have a GPS, throw a couple yoyo's out on the outline of the structure and fish it.

muskies like rocks ...

I looked at the Navionics map. It is pretty good. Take a look at the map. One point off the shoreline iays "ROCK DANGER TO NAVIGATION". That spot and the humps just to the north of it are the most dangerous rock bar on the lake. There are also several humps to the NW of the area I mentioned. A couple of these humps are shallow as well. Just go out there and go to these areas. Approach slowly with a trolling motor and mark them with your GPS. Personally I used to fish out there and never hit anything. The one spot I was very cautious by is the one I mentioned first. I have seen people hit that one hard... Good luck!

Navigate with care on Horsehead. Largest point on south shore has the nastiest hazards. They'll be unmarked and the boulders camouflage well with the water clarity. You'll see them clearly on a sunny windless day. If it's dark overcast or windy you'll never know they're out there. Our Northwoods Muskies Inc. chapter had an outing in Presque Isle a few falls ago (first time outing there) and one of our guys was unaware of its presence, and did a real number on his lower unit........ a loud crunch was heard from the boat landing.

There's a couple other small humps scattered throughout the west side of the lake. They're not as gnarly but they top out at 3-4ft sand/rock.

No reason to go on plane at this lake.
